Hello Trainers! The Season of Precious Paths is in full swing, with multiple Pokémon already making their debut in the game. With the High Zaptitude Event, we have debut of another Pokémon line, the Storm Petrel Pokémon: Wattrel and its evolution, the Frigatebird Pokémon: Kilowattrel. So do these Thunderbirds make any thundering impact on the Pokémon GO meta? Let’s find out!

One glance at the table reveals some eye-catching details. Kilowattrel, the Electric Pokémon introduced in Generation 9 alongside Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, has sparked debates from day one—fans love arguing whether or not it is the regional bird for generation 9 or just another flock filler. Kilowattrel’s habit of generating chatter hasn’t stopped in Pokémon GO. Its typing is a standout: shores up Electric notorious Ground weakness, flipping it into a handy resistance. But it introduces fresh vulnerabilities to Ice and Rock. The moveset packs a punch too—A handy fast move in Thunder Shock, the most famous Electric move of all time in Thunderbolt, and the infamous move in Aerial Ace. Talk about variety!
Kilowattrel actually has a pretty decent moveset. It has access to STAB Fast and Charged Attacks for both Electric and , something which is uncommon in the game (Archeops will attest!). But what keeps Kilowattrel back is its stats. A max CP of 2762, average Attack stat, not to forget a lowly 132 in the Defense bracket, all add up to make Kilowattrel nothing more than a Pokédex filler. Using our DPS Comparer Tool:

As we can see, Kilowattrel’s DPS or TDO is no where close to the top Electric attackers in the game. The difference is even more stark when it comes to performance in raids.

It’s pretty clear: Kilowattrel’s PvE impact is low and is not worth investing resources into.
Ideal Moveset: Thunder Shock
+ Thunderbolt
& Aerial Ace
A similar story for Kilowattrel continues in PvP—Its typing is impressive with only 2 weaknesses and 6 resistances and a decent moveset but poor stats again hamper its performance with the 132 defense stat stinging even more.
Kilowattrel’s performance in Great League is pretty much on expected lines. It does what an Electric type should do: win against and Water types like Corviknight, Azumarill, Feraligatr and Fearow; lose to Rock and Ground types like Bastiodon, Steelix, Clodsire and Cradily. In open league meta, Kilowattrel doesn’t make much of an impact, but there is potential to perform in certain theme cups or in an anti-meta/spice pick role.
Kilowattrel’s ideal IV spread for Great League is: 0/15/14, 1499 CP, Level 23.
Kilowattrel’s performance in Ultra League improves slightly with the higher CP range providing it with some much needed bulk, although not enough to flip the win-loss ratio to a positive side. It continues to be a Corviknight slayer while also having the likes of Jellicent, Empoleon, Galarian Moltres and Virizion in the win column. In the loss column we have the expected group of members like Gastrodon, Walrein, Giratina (Altered), Bellibolt and Runerigus. Kilowattrel, however, does require XL candy investment for Ultra League.
Kilowattrel’s ideal IV spread for Ultra League is: 0/15/15, 2495 CP, Level 47.
With a max CP of just 2762, the stats fall short of Master League requirements. The less written about its performance in Master League, the better!
The short answer for now: Nah! Skip it. Unless you are a fan of Roy from the anime! Currently, its PvE and PvP impact is too limited to make any kind of an investment. However, as I have always believed, get a good IV one and hoard it! The future is always unknown. Kilowattrel does not have a signature move, although it does have a signature ability: Wind Power. Unfortunately, there is no corresponding mechanic for abilities in Pokémon GO.
Looks like the Thunderbirds couldn’t thunder up the meta. However, remember the iconic phrase: Gotta Catch ‘Em All!
Let us know Trainers! Do you believe that Wattrel line is the regional bird line of Paldea? Which regional bird is your least favourite? (Hoothoot anyone? No wonder they had to give Ash a shiny Noctowl!). And as always Stay Safe!
