Niantic Partners with United Nations World Tourism Organization: Tourism through Real-World Games

Posted in

Trainers, we’ve received an interesting press release from Niantic’s official PR department, highlighting a new partnership between Niantic and United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Niantic is now an affiliate member of the organization with a simple mission: they want to enhance global tourism with their Augmented Reality platform.

UNWTO’s Travel.Enjoy.Respect program is the primary target where Niantic’s technical and event based ideas will be implemented, and by the looks of it, Niantic has been working on this for quite some time.

Anne Beuttenmüller, Niantic’s Head of Marketing in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa), shared that they are “…looking forward to creating brand new adventures for our players in collaboration with UNWTO to increase awareness around its mission of responsible tourism”.

UNWTO’s Travel.Enjoy.Respect program is known for it’s emphasis on responsible tourism, and Niantic is known for it’s focus on promoting local history and points of interest in your own neighborhood. This leads us to believe that events that are promoted through this partnership will likely look a lot like Chester’s Pokemon event which were hosted by Big Heritage and had Niantic’s seal of approval in 2017 and 2018. After all, this promo video showcases the focus of the program perfectly:

UNWTO’s leadership was quick to praise Niantic and welcome them among their affiliate ranks. “With our ongoing commitment to promote sustainable and responsible tourism, and Niantic having recently become a UNWTO Affiliate Member, this partnership is a natural fit” , said Ion Vilcu, Director of UNWTO’s Affiliate Members Department. “Niantic are pioneers in creating real-world mobile game experiences that not only motivate their players to discover new places, but also to appreciate the culture and beauty of the world around them,” he added.

Additional details for collaborative events between Niantic and UNWTO’s will be shared in the future at www.nianticlabs.com/blog and there are no event dates as of now.
