Metagross Pokémon GO

Trainers, a video surfaced on Youtube today, uploaded by EpiCrimson, a high level Pokemon GO player from Hong Kong. EpiCrimson powered up a Metagross to level 40 and went out to field test it in various combat scenarios.

Test #1: Gym Battle

  • Level 40 Meteor Mash Metagross and other Level 40 Pokemon versus a Level 40 Zen Headbutt / Dazzling Gleam Blissey

Results are astounding, with Machamp being the only Pokemon to beat Meteor Mash Metagross in Time to Win, although loosing more HP than Metagross.

Machamp 53 seconds 18.2%
Metagross 67 seconds 60.9%
Dragonite 70 seconds 25.8%
Tyranitar 84 seconds 31.4%

Test #2: Kirlia Raid

A 87% IV Metagross with Meteor Mash and a 100% Flash Cannon Metagross face off against the same Kirlia raid boss, and EpiCrimson measures how fast each of them manages to lower the boss HP to yellow health bar area. Both Metagross are at level 30.

The results are as expected, in favour of Meteor Mash:

  1. Meteor Mash Metagross took 20 seconds (87% IV)
  2. Flash Cannon Metagross took 26 seconds (100% IV)

Test #3: Level 30 Metagross vs lvl 40 Chansey

The next test features the same two Metagross from Test #2 with the addition of a Level 30 Salamence with Draco Meteor Dragon.

Metagross (Meteor Mash) 54 seconds
Salamence (Draco Meteor) 58 seconds
Metagross (Flash Cannon) 66 seconds

Test #3.1 features the same Pokemon doing a Gym sweep

None finished, but Meteor Mash Metagross lasted the longest, beating out Flash Cannon Metagross and Salamence. We always knew that Metagross is a bulky Pokemon, and now we finally have a scenario when that bulk comes into action.

Conclusions

Although our own move analysis is still under way, we’re confident that Meteor Mash is not only an amazing move Steel move, but one of the best moves to be added to the game in recent times.

Metagross was a niche defender, forgotten by most trainers, and with Meteor Mash it’s finally stepping up and getting a well deserved place in the meta game. If Niantic releases PvP this year without a significant change to the combat mechanics, MM Metagross will be a difficult opponent to face.

Stay tuned for our in-depth Meteor Mash analysis, written by Kratos, which should be coming out soon(ish).
