Pokémon GO’s leveling system is about to change in a massive way. Starting Wednesday, October 15, 2025, the game will raise the level cap from 50 to 80, alongside a full rebalance of how Trainers progress through the game.
This update is designed to make leveling more fun, rewarding, and achievable, while also celebrating milestones with exclusive rewards, avatar items, and gameplay perks. More details about this update will be released closer to the launch of the new leveling experience.
Here’s a breakdown of everything we know so far about the new Pokémon GO leveling system, legacy rewards, and the special XP Celebration event leading up to the change.
Starting on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, all Pokémon GO players will embark on a new and more rewarding leveling journey. The developers shared an overview of the
coming changes:
- Level cap increased from 50 to 80
- Leveling curve rebalanced (levels will be earned more frequently)
- Level-Up Research tasks for levels 41–50 removed
- New Level-Up Research added for levels 71–80
- Increased chance to become Lucky Friends at level 70+
- New level-up rewards including more storage, items, and avatar cosmetics (starting as early as level 25) will be added
- Some Trainers will automatically jump up in level on October 15 based on their total XP (no one will lose levels)
- XP requirements adjusted for some levels
💡 Additional details will be shared in October, closer to the release date.

Prior to the release of this blog post, we had a press briefing with the devs and we asked a few additional questions to clarify.
How much XP will I need to reach level 80?
The devs didn’t share any numbers, nor did they say which level you will be after the new update goes live. They did say that no one will lose any levels, and that you will jump through the new levels based on your XP.
Of course, it is fair to assume that you will need to complete the Level 71 through Level 80 Research tasks even if you have enough XP to reach those levels.
Does this mean we can level up Pokémon to level 80?
No, max Pokémon level stays level 50. You will still need to be Level 40 to power up Pokémon to Level 50. There will be no changes to the underlying CP formula, CPM values, or anything like that.
There will be no increase in Pokémon power or anything related to that at this moment, this is a change focused only on Trainer levels and making a smoother, more enjoyable leveling experience.
Why is Pokémon GO increasing the level cap now?
There are two main reasons, at least that’s the general idea we got from the developers:
- Next year is 2026, and the 10th Pokémon GO Anniversary. The team is looking for a way to attract new players, reactivate old players, and keep the current player base engaged and progressing.
- They wanted to create a system that allows for more frequent level ups, allowing the team to provide incentives for continuing the leveling journey. The current system is too rigid and there is a significant amount of Trainers that simply give up on leveling after a certain point.
The devs shared that they will be sharing more details about the update in early October, so stay tuned for that.
Will we be able to earn storage upgrades even if we are at max storage?
Even if you have max storage you will be able to earn more storage through leveling up for free, just reach the correct level and it will be applied. This is a new system that is being introduced with this update.
What about the Level 40 – 50 clothing rewards?
Some avatar rewards that are currently available for leveling will no longer be obtainable once the new leveling experience goes live. They will become legacy, and you won’t be able to obtain them anymore. More details on that below.

By Tuesday, October 14, 2025 (11:59 p.m. local time), Trainers will receive a special commemorative medal marking their highest level achieved (1–50).
- Level 50 players can show off a Level 50 Jacket and an exclusive avatar pose.
- Cosmetic rewards tied to levels 40–50 will no longer be obtainable after October 15.
- Don’t worry — if you’ve already earned them, you’ll keep all past level-up rewards permanently.
This makes October 14 the last chance to secure those legacy cosmetics.
To help Trainers push towards new milestones, Niantic is running a special XP Celebration event! From August 25 at 1:00 p.m. PDT until October 14, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. local time, all Trainers will get the following bonuses. These bonuses will stack with other event bonuses!
- ⭐ 2× Catch XP for Nice, Great, and Excellent Throws
- ⭐ +3,000 XP for winning Raids
- ⭐ +3,000 XP for winning Max Battles
- ⭐ Special Timed Research (available for Trainers level 5+) with over 7 million XP in rewards
Additionally, a Level 47 Research task has been made easier: instead of walking 25 km in a week eight times, you’ll only need to do it twice.
For those who want an extra boost, the Pokémon GO Web Store is offering the XP Celebration Ultra Box for US$9.99 (limit 3 per player). It includes:
- 15 × Lucky Eggs
- 1 × Super Incubator
- 1 × Incubator
- 5 × Incense
- 2 × Lure Modules
Final Thoughts: Preparing for Level 80 in Pokémon GO
This is the biggest leveling update in Pokémon GO history, and it finally gives us new goals beyond level 50. With exclusive rewards, legacy items, and a massive XP event, there’s plenty to prepare for before October 15.
If you’re sitting at Level 50, now’s your last chance to secure legacy rewards before October 15. If you’re still climbing, the XP Celebration event is the perfect opportunity to push higher and get a head start before the rebalance kicks in.
Either way, the next great challenge is almost here: Level 80 is waiting. Are you ready to farm and grind again in Pokémon GO?
