Trainers in India, the Pokémon Company has made a major announcement regarding the names of our beloved Pocket Monsters. Starting September 25, 2025, Pokémon names will be the same across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali, and will be based on their names in English.
Two years back, Pokémon GO began offering Hindi language support, and the game displayed not just Hindi script but also exclusive Hindi names for Pokémon. For instance, the popular Kanto species, Exeggutor, was called Nariyola.
This often served as a confusion for many Indians, as the country has 22 scheduled languages. Players who didn’t follow Hindi found it challenging to understand the new names as they were accustomed to their English versions, which were depicted in the Pokémon anime as well (irrespective of language).
Now, Pokémon names in any Indian language would be a complete transliteration of their names in English. So, Exeggutor would be ‘Exeggutor,’ regardless of the language. This change will reflect in the anime, Pokémon GO, as well as all Pokémon social media channels in India.
This way, players will no longer have a gap in identifying Pokémon names when interacting with those from other parts of the country.
With Pokémon events and media on the rise in India, this is a welcome change that ensures a seamless and enjoyable experience, helping everyone catch ’em all without any language barriers!
