Trainers, Gengar’s Special Raid Challenge has now finished in the Asian Pacific (APAC) region, allowing us to gather some valuable insight and tips and tricks for our readers in Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Americas.
Everything confirmed in the APAC region:
- Gengar raids are Tier 4 raids, featuring a 31256 CP Gengar raid boss with appropriate T4 rewards
- Gengars evolved during the Raid Challenge time window will learn Lick Ghost and Psychic Psychic
- TMs can be used to remove Lick and Psychic, but you can’t obtain them by using TMs
- Shiny Gengar has been released with some players claiming a 100% catch rate. We are not sure this is correct, but rather a case of very lucky RNG. Update: more reports have come in of shiny gengar having a 100% catch rate. It is safe to take as fact now it’s 100%, so just throw a pinap and enjoy your shiny!
- Gengar can be duo’d, but it requires strong counters and, if possible, beneficial weather if it has Shadow Ball
Unfortunately, parts of the APAC region experienced technical difficulties, with some players being prevented from participating in the event fully. Niantic has acknowledged and apologized for the problems via Twitter:
Due to system errors, Trainers in some parts of the APAC region were unable to connect to Pokémon GO during the Gengar Special Raid Challenge. We appreciate your patience as we work to resolve these issues and deeply apologize for the inconvenience.

It is still unclear if the problems were caused by a large amount of GPS spoofers “flying” into the APAC region from the rest of the world, or by technical difficulties on Niantic’s end. Here is a selection of tweets players shared on Twitter following the end of APAC Gengar raid day:
A very Shiny Gengar Raid Day. 8 raids hit with the Blue Mountains Pogo Raiders. 2 Shiny Gengar and a Shiny Pinsir turned up along the crawl as well! Level 36 hit along the way as well. Eventful day!!! #PokemonGo #ShinyPinsir #shinygengar #ShinyPokemon pic.twitter.com/Al74ktBpjh
