Pay attention to Gyms in your area on Saturday morning from 6:00am local time, as some will feature a red Raid egg, indicating that an Elite Raid will be hosted there.

Unlike other Mega-Evolving Pokémon, Rayquaza can’t Mega Evolve with Mega Energy alone. Trainers hoping to Mega Evolve their Rayquaza will need to teach it the Charged Attack Dragon Ascent first!
Dragon Ascent can only be learned by using Meteorites, so they are an absolute must have!

You cannot catch Rayquaza in its mega evolved state from the raid. The mega raid boss is always catchable in its base form and as such, the CP ranges are for a regular Rayquaza.
Rayquaza can be caught with the following CP values:
- 2102 – 2191 CP no weather boost
- 2627 – 2739 CP boosted by Windy weather boost

How to evolve Mega Rayquaza

Meteorite
Rayquaza is one of the most unique Mega Evolution to come to Pokémon GO based on it’s requirements. In order to get Mega Rayquaza you will not only need 400 Mega Energy, but also their signature move Dragon Ascent which will only be obtained through use of a Meteorite item.
After that, as long as you don’t remove Dragon Ascent, it will cost 80 Mega energy to Mega evolve the same Rayquaza again, or wait the required ‘cooldown’ period after which the Mega Evolution will be free.
This cooldown period becomes shorter the higher mega level your Mega Pokémon is. Mega Energy can be obtained via Mega Rayquaza Raids, and once you have evolved Mega Rayquaza, you can earn 100 Mega Energy per candy while walking it as your buddy.
You can walk any Rayquaza to earn Mega Energy, as long as you have previously evolved one to register it to your Mega Pokédex. For a full analysis on Mega Rayquaza as a raid attacker, go here!
What are Elite Raids?
Elite Raids are a challenging variety of Raid Battle that appear from special Raid Eggs. Once the Raid Egg hatches, a Raid Boss will appear for 45 minutes—but take note that Elite Raid Bosses can only be battled in-person. Gyms marked with ‘Ex Raid Gym’ can host Elite Raids.
Defeat Mega Rayquaza in an Elite Raid and you’ll earn an opportunity to catch it. Remember, Trainers will not be able to participate in Elite Raids using Remote Raid Passes.
The red egg will appear from 6:00am local time on the day of the event to alert you as to which gym will have a raid on it during the time period.
