Pokémon Global GO Fest 2024: Mega Evolution Guide

G’day PoGO lovers! Pokémon GO Fest 2024: Global is fast approaching, and it can be overwhelming to try and work out what your priorities should be during these types of huge weekend-long events. With the various habitat spawns, new shinies, raids, eggs, research tasks and other in-game experiences happening, it’s best to go in with a plan for how you want to tackle the day.

This is where Mega Evolutions come into play. From my perspective, it is really important to prioritise your Mega Evolutions throughout the weekend according to what types of Pokémon are:

  • Spawning in the wild;
  • You want to raid (this one will be fairly obvious – the newly released Necrozma);
  • Relevant for PvP / PvE which require XL candy;
  • Which Pokémon you have maxed out in terms of their mega evolution power.

Here is a quick summary of the Mega and XL situation to help you decide where you want your focus to be throughout the weekend. Note this article is focusing primarily on spawns and the Ultra Beasts.

TL;DR

  • You could ignore all the event spawns and focus solely on Necrozma. By mega evolving your max Psychic type megas and keeping them on rotation, you can maximise the amount of XL candy you’ll get from raiding Necrozma throughout the event.
  • Unfortunately, there are no Psychic type PvP or PvE relevant GO Fest spawns, so there is a lack of crossover in utility. The most spawns that appreciate an XL candy investment are Dragon and Normal types. That said – my personal pick for your best mega evolution throughout the event is Mega Gardevoir – its Psychic type works for a potential Necrozma XL candy boost, its Fairy type covers Carbink XL candy (see below), and its overall utility in Guzzlord and Buzzwole raids is amazing.
  • The number 1 XL candy priority grind for wild spawns should be Carbink, which aside from the recent Spelunker’s Cove event has not been available in the wild for optimal PvP IVs. Carbink is available during the Darkest Night rotations on the Saturday, or at all hours on the Sunday. Not sure about its spawn rates (might be low), but still potentially a great opportunity to get the one you want for PvP.
  • Although each rotation has at least one high priority pick for PvP, most players should have enough XL candy through recent events, community days, or longevity in the game. I have detailed which spawns do require an XL investment at different leagues throughout the article, including their priority for grinding.
  • When it comes to the Ultra Beasts raids, Necrozma, Kartana and Xurkitree should be your PvE priorities, while Buzzwole and Guzzlord should be your PvP picks (more detail throughout the article).
  • For Sunday – Dawn Wings and Dusk Mane Necrozma. If you are PvP or PvE focused, this should be your sole focus for the day, in particular getting enough candy and fusion energy to obtain both formes.
  • New shinies! Jangmo-o, Buzzwole, Xurkitree, Necrozma and Pheremosa are all available as shinies for the first time, and all look pretty swish.

Priority Spawns and XL Priorities

This table details the priority spawns per area, the league they are best suited to, and whether an XL candy investment will be required. I won’t go into too much detail on these today, in summary:

  • For newer players looking to expand their PvP rosters, the highest priority picks for XL are Carbink, Pidgeot, Dragonite, Garchomp and Mandibuzz
  • 2nd tier priority picks for XL grinding are Ferrothorn, Galarian Stunfisk, Kommo-o, Chandelure, Trevenant and Ursaluna.
  • Many other spawns throughout the event are PvP relevant (eg: Hoppip, Snivy, Noctowl, Emolga, Charjabug, etc) but don’t require XL candy investment in their relevant leagues.
  • Hydreigon is the main mon that has PvE utility. It needs its community day move Brutal Swing to have any viability in raids, but is very decent if you have it.

Ultra Beast Priorities

The below details all available Ultra Beasts and their PvP and PvE utility.

  • Necrozma is the number one priority, due to its utility and general lack of accessibility until now (only previously available via in person Go-Fest events).
  • Buzzwole and Guzzlord have very high PvP utility. Buzzwole is pretty spicy in the Master League these days and requires maxing out on XL candy, so you could potentially consider sticking to the lower leagues. Same for Guzzlord.
  • Kartana and Xurkitree are top tier Grass and Electric type raid attackers, respectively. Getting an army of L30-L35 Kartana is a great thing to have for your Grass team, and Xurkitree is glassy but very powerful and only a movepool update away from doing electrifying things (if it gets access to Wild Charge one day, watch out).
  • Of the rest – Nihilego is fairly middling, but a decent Poison type raid attacker. Celesteela and Pheromosa are not worth your time right now – Celesteela is a spicy PvP pick but not for PvE, and Pheromosa is too glassy to have any notable perks.
