What are Mighty Pokémon in Pokémon GO

We have received a flurry of questions following our Mighty Pokémon Debut article, with bewildered readers asking the same question: what are Mighty Pokémon? Well dear reader, we are here to answer your question, with an in-depth explanation of what are Mighty Pokémon, how to get them, and what are their benefits compared to normal Pokémon.

We also have a separate article analyzing Every Mighty Pokémon at the Pokémon GO Wild Area, so if you are looking for a more meta focused analysis, go ahead.

What are Mighty Pokémon?

Mighty Pokémon are a new type of rare and unusually powerful wild Pokémon, that are encountered at a higher level than normal wild Pokémon. They also have better IV values, with a guaranteed minimum of 13/13/13 IV.

Mighty Pokémon have been introduced with the Wild Area 2024: Fukuoka, Japan and Wild Area 2024: Global events, and it is not clear if they will be widely available after the event ends.

Mighty Pokémon stats

All mighty Pokémon have some shared stats:

  • Mighty Pokémon can be caught in the following level ranges:
    • Level 35 to 40 range if they are not weather boosted,
    • Level 40 to 45 range if they are weather boosted!
  • Mighty Pokémon have a high IV floor, with 13/13/13 minimum guaranteed IVs
  • Mighty Pokémon always appear as fully evolved Pokémon and can be Shiny in their fully evolved form!
  • More likely to be XL or XXL when caught, and are very aggressive during the catch encounter
  • Mighty Pokémon are much more difficult to capture, it is recommended to use Golden Razz Berries, and a GO Safari Ball

In order to get Mighty Pokémon, you need to play during the special Wild Area events, and often go hunting for Mighties. This involves walking to different Poké Stops and tracking them down.

How to get Mighty Pokémon

Mighty Pokémon look differently on the map, sporting a yellow effect around them. When you start catching a Mighty Pokémon, their CP will be hidden, and it will say “!!!”, as if you are not a high enough level to read their CP.

Catching Mighty Pokémon is a great way to save Stardust and Candy XL, as you are getting “ready made” Pokémon at a minimum of Level 40. Combine that with a high minimal IV floor, and you can see why these Pokémon are quite the catch.

During the catch scenario, Mighty Pokémon will attack frequently, trying to escape and defend against your catch attempts. It is advised, but not necessary, to use the new GO Safari Balls to catch Mighty Pokémon. Wait, GO Safari Balls? What are those now?

What are GO Safari Balls?

Safari Ball

GO Safari Balls are a new type of Pokéball that is exclusively (for now) available at the Wild Area events. GO Safari Balls are highly effective Poké Balls that make capturing Pokémon much easier. The game recommends using one when encountering a mighty Pokémon.

During the Wild Area events, Trainers get an hourly Timed Research task to restock on GO Safari Balls. All unused GO Safari Balls will expire and disappear from your Item Bag at the end of the event. We don’t know the GO Safari Ball catch rate yet.

Pokémon caught using the GO Safari Ball are not transferable to Pokémon Home.

Frequently asked questions

Will Mighty Pokémon be available outside of Wild Area events?

We really don’t know, we asked Niantic about this, and will update the article after we receive a response. Our assumption at the time of writing this article is no.

Do Mighty Pokémon have better moves than normal Pokémon?

No, Mighty Pokémon have access to the same moves as regular wild Pokémon, they do not have access to any hidden moves.

Are Mighty Pokémon better than normal, powered up, Pokémon?

No, they are exactly same Pokémon. The only difference with Mighty Pokémon is that you don’t have to spend Stardust or Candy XL to power up your Pokémon to Level 40+. Your 13/13/13 Snorlax that you powered up to Level 45 has the same stats as a Mighty Snorlax that ends up being a Level 45, 13/13/13, Pokémon.

Are mighty Pokémon IV same for every player or everyone encounters a random IV Mighty?

Mighty Pokémon have the same IVs for all Trainers above Level 30 who encounter them. Trainers under Level 30 encounter wild Pokémon with IVs and CPs unique to them, and that applies to Mighty Pokémon as well.

Which Mighty Pokémon have been released during the Wild Area 2024 event?

The following Pokémon can be mighty during the Pokémon GO Wild Area 2024: Global and Pokémon GO Wild Area 2024: Fukuoka, Japan events:
