Dynamax Dialga takes the spotlight on Saturday, November 14, during GO Wild Area 2026: Global. With other powerful Max Battle Pokémon competing for your resources, is the Time Dragon worth investing in?
Before we go any further, let’s make one thing clear: Dynamax Dialga is not a weak Max Pokémon. Its 275 ATK, 211 DEF, and 205 base Stamina give it a strong foundation, while its Steel/Dragon typing offers plenty of useful resistances.
It also offers flexibility. Dragon Breath produces Max Wyrmwind, while Metal Claw produces Max Steelspike. Both Fast Attacks take 0.5 seconds. Choose the move before battle to match the attacking role you need.
The problem is competition. Dialga faces powerful alternatives in both types, so its value depends on your existing team and the bosses you want to tackle. If you need help catching one first, see our Dynamax Dialga counters and battle guide.

The tables use GO Hub’s default rankings checked on November 8, 2026: Level 40 Pokémon, 15/15/15 IVs, Level 3 Max Attacks, a neutral opponent, and no weather boost. DMG measures one Max Attack, not DPS or total battle performance. Only Pokémon marked available in the database are included.
Percentages are calculated from the displayed integer damage values: (comparison Pokémon’s DMG ÷ Dialga’s 268 DMG − 1) × 100, rounded to one decimal place. These are benchmark comparisons, not guaranteed damage against every boss.

Dialga ranks #4 for Dragon damage. Eternatus leads with Dynamax Cannon; comparing base Attack alone would substantially understate its advantage. Gigantamax Duraludon is also a stronger damage option, while Palkia’s lead is small.
If you are targeting Duraludon during Wild Area, our Gigantamax Duraludon counters and battle guide covers preparation. Its G-Max Depletion remains Dragon-type regardless of its Fast Attack.

Dialga’s stronger niche is Steel, where it ranks #2. Crowned Sword Zacian deals 19.4% more damage than Dialga in this benchmark. Expressed in the opposite direction, Dialga deals 16.3% less than Zacian; the percentages differ because the denominator changes.
Dialga nevertheless improves on several established options: it deals approximately 6.8% more damage than Metagross, 7.6% more than Excadrill, and 9.4% more than Crowned Shield Zamazenta. That makes it a useful upgrade if your Steel attacking team needs work.
For the leading alternative, see our Crowned Sword Zacian raid guide. Acquisition costs should be compared separately from damage: passes, Max Particles, form-change requirements, and existing investments do not translate into one universal cost ratio.
Dialga’s defensive appeal comes from its resistance spread and short Fast Attack duration. It takes reduced damage from ten types, including double resistance to Grass and Poison, but is vulnerable to Fighting and Ground.
That makes it worth considering when its resistances match the boss’s attacks. It does not resist Dragon: its Steel resistance and Dragon weakness cancel out. The same cancellation leaves it neutral to Fairy, Ice, and Fire.
Crowned Shield Zamazenta is a major defensive competitor. For example, our Gigantamax Duraludon guide recommends Zamazenta as the leading defender and also lists Dialga among the defensive options. That is a useful matchup example, rather than proof that one Pokémon is always the better tank.
Use GO Hub’s Max Battle tank rankings by incoming attack type to compare defensive options for the matchup you need. Attacker rankings do not establish tank rankings, and hypothetical full-roster positions should not be treated as current results.
For team roles, Max Guard, Max Spirit, and Max Meter strategy, see our Max Battles strategy guide.
Dynamax Dialga is worth considering, especially if you need a stronger Steel attacker. Its ability to cover two attacking types and its useful defensive matchups give it more value than a single damage ranking suggests.
For trainers with well-developed alternatives, however, another large investment may be difficult to justify. Decide which role your team is missing before spending Stardust, Candy, or Max Particles. A small damage improvement alone is not always enough reason to rebuild an established team.
Collectors can also pursue its Shiny during Wild Area. Check the GO Wild Area 2026: Global guide for the schedule and bonuses, and the Wild Area announcement covering Location Backgrounds for the in-person conditions; background eligibility depends on the event and encounter.
