Dynamax Palkia: How Good Is It in Max Battles?

Dynamax Palkia takes the spotlight on Sunday, November 15, during GO Wild Area 2026: Global. The Space Dragon brings a massive 280 ATK, a solid 215 DEF, and 189 base Stamina, alongside the quick, 0.5-second Dragon Breath.

On paper, it has plenty to offer. In practice, its most compelling role may be defensive: Palkia combines strong Dragon damage with excellent matchups against incoming Water and Fire attacks. Let’s see where it fits into your Max Battle team.

If you need help catching one, our Dynamax Palkia counters and battle guide covers team preparation and the boss’s different moves.

Dynamax Palkia: Stats, Typing, and Moves

Palkia cannot currently use Max Geyser. Both of its Fast Attacks are Dragon-type, so both produce Max Wyrmwind. Its Water typing provides defensive value without giving it a Water-type Max Attack.

As an Attacker: Third Place, with Strong Competition

GO Hub’s default comparison uses Level 40 Pokémon, perfect 15/15/15 IVs, and Level 3 Max Attacks against a neutral opponent without weather boosts. Values were checked on November 8, 2026. DMG is damage per Max Attack, not DPS.

Percentages use the displayed damage values: (comparison Pokémon’s DMG ÷ Palkia’s 272 DMG − 1) × 100, rounded to one decimal place.

Ranking Pokémon Max Attack DMG Damage vs. Palkia
1 Sprite of Eternatus from Pokémon GO Eternatus Dynamax Cannon 348 +27.9%
2 Sprite of Gigantamax Duraludon from Pokémon GO Gigantamax Duraludon G-Max Depletion 302 +11.0%
3 Sprite of Dynamax Palkia from Pokémon GO Dynamax Palkia Max Wyrmwind 272 Baseline

Palkia ranks #3 for Dragon Max Attack damage. It trails Eternatus and Gigantamax Duraludon, while narrowly beating Dialga. Its high base Attack alone does not tell the whole story: the rivals’ different Max Attacks matter.

Third place still makes Palkia a strong attacking option. Whether it deserves your resources depends on what you already have built and whether you also need its defensive strengths. There is no reason to dismiss a useful Pokémon solely because a stronger damage dealer exists.

If you are considering the event’s other major Dragon option, see our Gigantamax Duraludon counters and battle guide.

As a Tank: A Standout Against Water and Fire Attacks

Palkia’s defensive niche is its biggest selling point. Its double resistance to Water and Fire reduces damage from those types to approximately 39.1% of neutral damage before other modifiers and rounding. It also resists Steel, although its resistance spread is otherwise narrow.

GO Hub currently ranks Palkia #1 against both incoming Water and Fire attacks under its default tank settings.

Incoming Attack Type Palkia’s Rank Tank Score Average HP Lost per Hit Full Ranking
Water #1 126.9 20.6% Water tank rankings
Fire #1 126.9 20.6% Fire tank rankings

The tank benchmark uses Level 40 Pokémon with perfect IVs and a reference boss, combining spread and targeted damage with dodge assumptions. Max Guard and Max Spirit are excluded. Higher scores and lower HP loss are better. Max Meter generation breaks durability ties; this is not a full battle simulation or a prediction of damage from every boss.

Dragon Breath is the recommended Fast Attack in these rankings. Its short duration is useful for charging, but Max Meter gain depends on damage and attack duration, not simply Charged Attack energy generation.

The distinction between the boss’s typing and its attack typing matters here. Being excellent against Water attacks does not automatically make Palkia the best tank against every Water-type boss. Its weaknesses to Dragon and Fairy can change the matchup dramatically.

For example, our Dynamax Palkia battle guide lists Palkia among the defensive options but warns about Draco Meteor. A Pokémon that handles Fire Blast or Hydro Pump well may need to switch roles when the boss uses Dragon damage.

For other matchups, consult GO Hub’s Max Battle tank rankings by incoming attack type. Future roster positions remain speculative and should not determine today’s investment by themselves.

What Should You Upgrade First?

Your upgrade order should match the role you need Palkia to fill:

  • Tank: Prioritize its Pokémon level and Max Guard if your team needs it to absorb targeted attacks in favourable matchups.
  • Attacker: Prioritize its Pokémon level and Max Wyrmwind if you need it to deal damage during the Max Phase.
  • Flexible team member: Build the role you need first, then expand its Max Moves as your resources allow. Coordinate healing and shielding with your group.

Our Max Battles strategy guide explains team roles, Max Guard, Max Spirit, and Max Meter management.

Verdict: A Specialist Tank with Strong Dragon Damage

Dynamax Palkia is a worthwhile investment when its strengths fill a gap in your team. Its defensive matchups give it a clear purpose even if you already have another Dragon attacker.

For trainers mainly looking to improve damage, the decision is less urgent if their existing options are already powered up. For those who need a reliable defender against Water or Fire attacks, Palkia has a much stronger case.

If you plan to farm one on Sunday, check the GO Wild Area 2026: Global guide for the schedule and bonuses. Decide on its role before spending your Max Particles: Palkia can contribute on both sides of the battle, but you do not need to finish every upgrade at once.
