Of the three Legendary Kanto birds, Dynamax Zapdos is probably the most straightforward Pokémon to analyse in the current Max Battle meta. Its job is to zap opponents out of their boots, and it still does so very well around 20 months after its debut, thanks to its whopping 253 ATK stat.
In the tanking department, however, things are less exciting. Despite being the only one of the three birds with access to a 0.5-second Fast Attack, its modest bulk means many other Pokémon in the current pool already outshine it.

*Thunder Shock is a legacy move. If your Zapdos does not already know it, you will need an Elite Fast TM to teach it.
Gigantamax Toxtricity Hits Harder, but Do You Have One?
To be honest, it is understandable that some Trainers view Dynamax Zapdos as their “best” Electric attacker. Gigantamax Toxtricity deals around 15% more Max Attack damage, but that only helps if you actually have one.
The electric lizard made its debut during GO Wild Area in November 2024 and returned during GO Fest 2025: Max Finale on August 23 and 24. If those opportunities passed you by, Zapdos remains a particularly useful option for dealing Electric damage in Max Battles, especially if you are newer to the game.
The table below uses GO Hub’s Electric-type Max Move damage rankings, checked on October 1, 2026. Percentages are calculated relative to Dynamax Zapdos and rounded to one decimal place. They compare Max Attack damage, rather than overall battle DPS.

How Well Could Zapdos Hold Up in the Future?
The longer-term picture is not bad either. In the full-roster projection used for this analysis, Dynamax Zapdos would drop to #8 out of 71 possible Electric damage dealers. It loses out quite convincingly to the likes of Xurkitree and both formes of Thundurus, but still lands inside the top 10.
That suggests some staying power. Just keep in mind that this is a hypothetical comparison, not a confirmed release schedule, and future moves or balance changes could shift those rankings.
With Crowned Shield Zamazenta and Dynamax Latias setting the bar for generalist tanks, and other Pokémon filling niche roles through double or even triple resistances, Zapdos has a tough time standing out. Its resistances are all single resistances, which does not help its case.
Thunder Shock Helps, but It Cannot Fix Everything
Its biggest selling point here is arguably
Thunder Shock, a 0.5-second Fast Attack that helps it build the Max Meter quickly. That is useful, but it does not make Zapdos a dedicated tank. Its modest DEF and Stamina leave it outside the top 10 in every matchup listed below, with its best placements being #12 against Fighting and Ground attacks.
In the full-roster projection, it falls considerably further down the rankings. Fast tapping can only get you so far.
The table below compares Zapdos’s tanking ranks by incoming attack type. These are separate from Max Meter generation, and the full-roster rankings are projections.
| Incoming Attack Type | Current Max Roster | Full Roster (Projected) |
|---|---|---|
| Fighting | #12 | #100 |
| Ground | #12 | #83 |
| #15 | #52 | |
| Bug | #18 | #88 |
| Steel | #19 | #64 |
| Grass | #23 | #114 |
| Dragon | #39 | #207 |
| Dark | #46 | #211 |
| Electric | #46 | #280 |
| Ghost | #46 | #236 |
| Water | #46 | #255 |
| Fairy | #47 | #205 |
| Normal | #49 | #273 |
| Psychic | #51 | #253 |
| Poison | #52 | #288 |
| Rock | #82 | #503 |
| Ice | #96 | #523 |
Dynamax Zapdos is best used as an Electric damage dealer. Leave the dedicated tanking duties to something better suited to the job.
The good news is that it is still a very good damage dealer, ranking #2 behind Gigantamax Toxtricity and remaining inside the top 10 in the full-roster projection. If you are building your Max Battle attacker roster and need Electric coverage, Zapdos is well worth considering.
Just remember that G-Max Toxtricity already hits harder. Another rerun would certainly be welcome (hint hint, Scopely).
