Pokémon GO players have been waiting with bated breath for the debut of Mega Metagross for a long time. With the Pseudo Legendary behemoth finally coming to Pokémon GO, just how good is it going to be in the raid meta?
After all, powerhouses like Zacian Crowned Sword, Zamazenta Crowned Shield, and Dusk Mane Necrozma symbolize Steel type leadership, while the Psychic typing has everyone on their toes as the Megas of Mewtwo (particularly Y) and Shadow Rider Calyrex are still waiting to be unleashed.
Mega Metagross is poised to be strong, but the question is how strong? Keep reading as we find out how mega meta is Mega Metagross in Pokémon GO!

- Mega Metagross’ ATK may not be as high as the Megas of fellow Pseudo Legendaries, but it’s still pretty high.
- Unlike other Pseudo Legendary Megas, however, Mega Metagross resists attacks of all the types it is super-effective against as a Steel type attacker (Fairy, Ice, and rock]). On top of that, it has superior bulk, making it a perfect Mega to not only dish out unadulterated damage, tank hits, and keep the Mega boost running for a long time.
- As a Psychic type, no points for guessing that it’s not as amazing as its Steel type role.
- It is worth remembering that either way, Mega Metagross is going to provide an attack boost for other Psychic and Steel type Pokémon in the raid with you, so either way it has a use!
Now, let’s dig into the details.
Here are the best Steel-type attackers in Pokémon GO, sorted as per our GO Hub DPS Comparer Tool:

- No surprises, but the Crowned doggos take charge, positioned right at the forefront of Steel types. Technically, you can call Zamazenta Crowned better on paper in general due to unrivalled bulk and TDO. However, Zacian Crowned is preferred against Fairy types due to ZamC’s Fighting subtyping, making it take neutral damage from Fairy.
- Mega Metagross is beaten in DPS figures by Dusk Mane Necrozma, who, much to Mega Metagross’ chagrin, shares the same typing and is simply better.
- Even though Mega Metagross’ Meteor Mash is a two-bar Charged Attack and has a lower cooldown (2.50s) than the 1-bar Sunsteel Strike of DM Necrozma (3.00s), the latter is just too powerful and overrides Meteor Mash’s higher frequency of usage.
- Also, DM Necrozma has Metal Claw, whose 0.5s duration and pairing with the 1-bar Sunsteel Strike makes it better with Power Play as well. Bullet Punch has a 1.00s cooldown. In other words, Power Play (arguably one of the best features in the game) is better on Dusk Mane Necrozma than Mega Metagross.
- Mega Metagross does have the Mega Boost up its sleeve, and with its natural bulk, it thrives against Fairy, Ice, and Rock Raid Bosses, and plays a significant role in winning the battle more efficiently.
- All things said and done, DM Necrozma is the stronger Steel attacker than Mega Metagross by a mile, and that itself is overshadowed by the Crowned doggos.
- If anything, Mega Metagross is cheaper and easier to power up, and deserves to be maxed out. But ultimately, you want the Crowned doggos as your main Steel Pokémon as they are also among the leading attackers in Dynamax/Giganatamax battles. This dual Raid and Max Battle utility makes them one of the best in Pokémon GO.
- Shadow Metagross does around 3.5% more damage than Mega Metagross, and this marginal difference is not really worthwhile, as Mega Metagross boasts around 45% more TDO, establishing it as the better attacker.

- I know you had to scroll to find Mega Metagross, but sadly, that’s how it is. Its DPS is really downnnnn there.
- And, it’s actually even worse, as I left out the alternative strong moveset for the top attackers (Psycho Cut). Including Psycho Cut for the Mewtwos and Mega Alakazam would further plummet down Mega Metagross’ Psychic standing.
- To add to your woes, Mega Metagross takes neutral damage from Fighting types, one of the main Raid Bosses Psychic-type counters are built for.
- That said, just like shiny Mega Metagross’ colors, there is one silver lining.

- Mega Metagross has excellent TDO, paving the way for long Mega Boosts in Raids.
- This is particularly an asset against Poison-type Raid Bosses, as Mega Metagross’ Steel/Psychic typing helps it triple resist Poison damage.
- Obviously, Primal Groudon would exceed Mega Metagross in super-effective damage output against Poison type Raid Bosses, but Mega Metagross’ holding power is great.
- Whether it’s Steel or Psychic, Mega Metagross combines offense and defense quite well, making it a decent Mega. Keep in mind that it is outclassed in both typings.
All the best, trainers!
