Lunala Meta Guide: The Better Evolution?

Lunala is in Five-Star Raids after the hype of Kalos Tour. Previously, I had discussed the impact Solgaleo can potentially make in the current meta. Let us now see how Lunala, compatriot of Solgaleo, affect the meta.

Lunala is a Psychic Ghost Legendary Pokémon, first introduced in Generation 7 with the release of Pokémon: Sun & Moon. Despite being a Legendary Pokémon, its actually a part of three-stage branched evolution line: Cosmog→Cosmoem→Solgaleo/Lunala. Its dual typing lends it a double weakness to 2 different types: Dark and Ghost. But it also has 4 different resistances which also includes a double resistance to Normal and a triple resistance to Fighting.

Unlike Solgaleo, whose awful moveset leaves it irrelevant in the PvE meta, Lunala packs some seriously strong options. It has access to both Psychic and Ghost Fast as well as Charged Attacks. This opens Lunala up to act both as a Psychic as well as a Ghost type raid attacker. Let us start with Lunala as a Psychic raid attacker. Using our DPS Comparer Tool:

As we can see, while Lunala may not exactly be in the upper echelon of Psychic raid attackers, it is not very far behind. In fact, if you look at the Top Psychic Raid Attackers in the current meta, you will see Lunala at #16, which is certainly an A-Tier position. However, you can’t forget that Psychic attackers are often used against Fighting type raid bosses, and with Lunala triple resisting Fighting, once Lunala is on the raid field, it is not leaving.

Lunala, as a Ghost raid attacker, is even better. It has great stats and access to one of the best Ghost moves combination in the game: Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball

Lunala as a Ghost raid attacker is right up there with the best. While Dawn Wings Necrozma sits right at the very top, Lunala is not far behind. It is at #7 among the Top Ghost Raid Attackers. Obviously, Lunala’s double weakness to Ghost type moves means dodging becomes essential for it to shine against Ghost raid bosses.

From PvE stardom to PvP glory—Lunala’s impact rolls on. Lunala is a serious contender in the PvP meta. It is currently ineligible for Great League while in Ultra League Lunala may have some spice play. But it is in Master League where Lunala performs to its full potential.

Lunala holds a strong position in the Master League meta, comfortably ranking among the top 10 Pokémon. It goes toe to toe with its fusion counterpart: Dawn Wings Necrozma. Comparing Lunala’s performance with Dawn Wings Necrozma in 1v1 shield scenario, Lunala gains Groudon and Palkia (Origin) while it looses out to Eternatus, Ho-Oh and Zacian (Crowned Sword). But in zero and 2v2 shields scenarios, Lunala gains the upper hand with extra wins like Black & White Kyurems and Zamazenta (Crowned Shield) in zero shield scenario and Dialga (Origin) and Eternatus in 2v2 shields scenario.

Coming to Lunala’s overall performance against the Master League meta, Lunala’s least number of wins come in 1v1 shield scenario. It still has more wins than losses, with Lugia, Solgaleo and Metagross in the win column while Yveltal, Dusk Mane Necrozma and Zacian (Crowned Sword) occupying the loss column. Lunala’s number of wins increase in 2v2 shields scenario adding Ho-Oh to its win column. It is in zero shield matchups when Lunala shines the best further adding Zekrom and both Kyurems to its number of wins.

Lunala’s ideal IV spread for Master League is: 15/15/15, 4570 CP, Level 50.

Is Lunala Worth Building?

It should be pretty clear that you definitely want a Lunala in your meta collection. It is right up there among the best, impacting multiple metas. Decently strong as a Psychic raid attacker, while being among the very best as a Ghost raid attacker. In PvP, it doesn’t disappoint, going head on with all the meta monsters in Master League. Very rarely do we come across such a versatile Pokémon in our game.

If you snag a high IV Lunala from raids, proceed to power it up. Lunala remains a staple in the current meta, with substantial potential for future viability.

Parting Words

Well Trainers, we are at the end! Bit of a fun trivia: Lunala loses the most weight of any Pokémon after evolution. Lunala still punches above its weight class in raids and Master League battles. It is not just a Legendary, it is a meta mainstay. Grab a high IV one, power it up and watch Lunala eclipse the competition.

Let us know Trainers! Did you play Pokémon: Sun & Moon on 3ds when it first came out? What was your team of 6? Was Lunala in there? (or like me, you are in the Solgaleo club!).

As always, stay safe! and happy raiding!
