Body Slam Snorlax announced as a July Field Research weekly stamp reward

Posted in

Opening July’s weekly Field Research boxes will be an exciting affair, as the featured Pokemon is the beloved Gym defender: Snorlax!  A brand new set of Research Tasks will become available on July 1st, at 1:00 p.m. PDT, focusing on Pokemon originally discovered in the Kanto region.

The official announcement mentions three Kanto Pokemon by name (Pikachu, Ditto and Eevee), but also shares that the Field Research Snorlax will feature a special move: Body Slam!

Body Slam is quite a move to have on a gym Snorlax:

  • Body Slam a three bar Normal type move
  • it deals 50 damage per charge, has a 1.9 seconds cooldown and activates much faster than Hyper Beam
  • it is more threatening in a Gym, as it’s frequent activation and shorter dodge window makes it harder to dodge than Hyper beam
  • it deals reduced damage only to Ghost, Rock and Steel types

This is also the first time that a Pokemon with a special move is being awarded as a Field Research reward. A modern-day Snorlax can’t hold Body Slam naturally or through TMs, as the move was removed from it’s move pool a while ago.

On the flip side, everyone who was holding onto their 2016’s BS Snores in hopes of making a good trade, just got their dreams completely ruined. And here we were, hoping that our special 2016 hatch will be valuable one day.

Here’s a table of how Snorlax’s move sets compare in terms of Cycle DPS and Time to First Activation:

With that being said, let’s talk about one more thing…

…a shiny Snorlax?

With Community Day events and with returning Legendary raid bosses bringing a guaranteed shiny variant of the featured Pokemon, is is possible that the weekly Field Research rewards will become another channel to gradually release shiny forms.

A few weeks ago, shiny forms were added for all Pokemon originally found in the Kanto region, Snorlax included:

Regular Snorlax

Shiny Snorlax

Although there is no confirmation, nor we expect any additional leaks / hints, were hoping that a Shiny Snorlax will be released alongside as a weekly Field Research reward. Call us overly optimistic, but we’re rooting for this one!
