Babies in Pokémon GO – why are they missing?

If you’ve been playing this game for a very long time, you probably remember when the first wave of Gen II Pokémon dropped. In fact, the official blog post was posted on December 12, 2016. It’s been a while, huh?

The first Generation 2 Pokémon to be available in Pokémon GO were the babies: Togepi, Pichu, Igglybuff, Cleffa, Magby, Smoochum and Elekid. They were all hatchable from eggs until one day Niantic decided to remove them from the egg pool. And they haven’t been obtainable outside of events ever since.

Please, keep in mind that this article was written in January 2021. Egg pools are always subject to change.

Baby Pokémon in Pokémon GO

Baby Pokémon have been absent in the regular egg pool for a long time, but you can still get some of them during specific events (some examples: Magby/Elekid could be hatched during Magmar/Electabuzz Community Day and Smoochum was obtainable as a field-research reward during the Longchamp Event).

Farming Electabuzz or Magmar candies is not a big deal, as they had their respective Community Days not too long ago and they can also spawn in the wild. Togetic, on the other hand, is one of the rarest spawns in Pokémon GO. How many Togetic have you seen in the wild? I bet your answer is zero, or close to zero.

Wondering which baby Pokémon are obtainable in Pokémon GO as of now? Here’s the list:

As you can see, almost all of them are unobtainable.

Baby Pokémon in PvE

Baby Pokémon are useless in raids and gym battles, as their stats are not impressive at all. Totally understandable, since they’re not the last stage of the evolutionary line.

Baby Pokémon theme gym

Aside from being placed in a gym to follow a specific theme, there’s not much you can do with them.

Baby Pokémon in PvP

Here’s where things get interesting. Have you ever played in the Master League? If the answer is yes, how many Togekiss have you encountered? Togekiss is actually one of the best Pokémon in Master League and Master League Premier. It can also be used in Ultra League and if you’re lucky, you might be able to get a good one for Great League as well.

Master League dominant Pokémon

You might expect that a dominant Pokémon such as Togekiss would somehow be obtainable in the game right? Well, you’d be wrong, as there is no way to farm Togekiss candies unless you do Togetic raids (whenever they’re available) or walk a Togepi, Togetic or Togekiss as your buddy. As a player that hatched plenty of Togepi when it was available in eggs, I have enough candy to power up one, maybe two Togekiss to level 40. But that’s it. I feel sorry for trainers who started playing once the babies were removed from the egg pool.

And Togekiss is not the only Pokémon from the list above that’s good in PvP. Munchlax is one of the best safe swaps in Great League, and Happiny & Wynaut had some play in Little Cup. In fact, Wynaut was one of the best Pokémon in that meta. Is there any way to obtain them and farm candies outside of some specific events? Absolutely not. And let me tell you, hatching eggs is not that easy when you’re in lockdown.

Completing the Pokédex

Some players are just collectors. They don’t care about meta relevancy, movesets or performance in GBL. If you’re a collector and you just started playing, I think there should be a way for you to obtain all babies listed above. Of course you can always ask your friends to trade them to you (assuming they still have some of them in their collection), but they shouldn’t be that hard to get. They’re not worth the exclusivity.

Babies in Pokémon GO

In case you didn’t know, most of the babies listed have their shinies available in the game. Shiny hunting is in fact one of the main reasons why plenty of trainers play this game. Why can’t they at least have the chance to shiny hunt baby Pokémon regularly?

Egg pool shakeup

The last egg shakeup in Pokémon GO happened three months ago. As you can tell, baby Pokémon didn’t make the cut and were not included in any of the egg tiers.

Wouldn’t it be better to include Pokémon such as Togepi or Munchlax instead of Snubbull, Wailmer, Cubone, Growlithe, Zubat or Wooper? They have been featured in plenty of events and everyone should have enough candies to evolve them.

Egg pool shakeup

Furthermore, unlike the babies, they can spawn in the wild! Given the fact that we have 7 different egg tiers (2KM, 5KM, 10KM, 5KM AS, 10KM AS, 7KM, Strange Eggs), wouldn’t it be nice to include the babies in one of them instead of the Pokémon listed above? What do you think?

Breeding in Pokémon GO

Breeding would also be a great way to hatch the Pokémon that you want. However, although most of the main features from the main series games have been implemented in Pokémon GO, breeding still remains as a mystery. Will it ever be implemented in GO? We’ll see.

If you were a Niantic employee, how would you implement breeding in a reasonable way? Let us know!

Johto Region Celebration Event

Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Tyrogue and Smoochum will be hatching from 5km eggs during the Johto Region Celebration Event. Why did Togepi get the shaft again?

Johto Region Celebration Event

Togepi is such an iconic Pokémon from the Johto region, featured in the anime as Misty’s buddy, but it didn’t make the cut once again and the only way to obtain Togepi candies will be by doing Togetic T3 raids, yet again locking good stuff behind a paywall. Should it be that difficult to farm Togepi candies? Feel free to let us know in the comments section down below.
