Generation III is here: weather effects and 50 new Hoenn Pokemon coming to Pokemon GO

it is official! Generation III is launching in Pokemon GO later this week, bringing 50 new Pokemon from the Hoenn region and weather effects!

The official release trailer is available above this article and shows the following Pokemon species:

In addition, all of the Pokemon featured in the Trailer seem to have attached weather effects. We can confirm that the following six weather effects are coming to Pokemon GO:

  • Sunny weather
  • Rainy weather
  • Snowy weather
  • Foggy weather
  • Cloudy weather
  • Windy weather

Each weather type influences different Pokemon spawns and empowers various moves, abilities and more.

The official website states the following:

For example, you’ll find your odds of discovering Mudkip splashing around will greatly improve on rainy days, as certain Pokémon types will be more commonly found during various weather conditions. Additionally, attacks of certain types will be more effective during some weather conditions, so a Charizard’s Fire Spin will perform better on sunny days, for example.

We are super excited to see which Pokemon and moves are influenced by which weather, but it seems that as of now, Ludicolo is connected to Rain, Salamence to Wind, Shiftry to Sunny, Aggron to Cloudy weather.

The official press release has more information and visuals on the upcoming weather effects, which we’ll publish later on our Youtube channel. Curiously, weather has multiple different effects, including increased stardust gain from select Pokemon species.

Also, let’s end this post with the following quote from the press release:

For the first time in an augmented reality mobile game, real-world weather will now be a factor in the gameplay experience. As Trainers are exploring the world around them in search of Pokémon, the current weather in their vicinity will be visible on the in-game map. The real-world weather around Trainers will impact the gameplay of Pokémon GO in a variety of ways that include changing Pokémon habitats and where they can be found, increasing Combat Power, and earning more Stardust after catching a Pokémon.

When is the release date of gen 3 in this month????

    • kevin batema

      Yes i’am thinking friday

  • kevin batema

    The hype has started

  • Eden rahav

So the release date is tomorrow?

    • Simone Amoruso

      Later this week.

  • Gonzalo Cordoba

I hope the weather be different depending of the hemisphere. I mean, it will be a little akward if I take a walk in january and the weather is snowy

    • Simone Amoruso

Obviously. The weather is not an hemisphere thing. It’s a zone thing. You could have snow and I could have sun in the same time and in the same hemisphere.

      • Gonzalo Cordoba

Sure thing, I hope it depends of Google weather or some like that, every city could have its own weather

  • Eden rahav

    What has started?

  • Leon119

    50 ? Shouldn’t it be more than that ?

    • ElesisLover

Yeah but I think they may add 50 this month and the rest next month they did say it’ll gradually roll out but at least we get 50 of them 🙂

  • Nizar3003

    cool update 🙂

  • Aryx

Nice one! I’m genuinely impressed by Niantic right now.
Didn’t expect I would ever say this.

    • mahroof mohammed

      Exactly 💯

  • ElesisLover

This crossed my mind but would this effect how we hatch Pokemon as well by the weather

  • Shin

I count 22 species so far. Pre-evos are implied given what we see are final forms and the starters are a given.

  • Dill

oooo, I was always thinking that weather effects should have been a thing, especially for an AR game. Happy it’s being implemented.

  • Peg Janssens

So what about countries that never see snow??? – No ice pokemon for them?
and fog, fog is a complicated thing, fog can appear very heavy around water but 10m away and no fog at all, so how does it know there’s fog around the river as it’s not in the weather app.
Or does it only rely on a weather povider? we have a weather border in our town, it can rain for hours but 10 meters to the left the sun shines the whole day, no rain whatsoever

    • Tyler Enterline

Just because it doesnt snow doesnt mean you wont see ice pokemon, all it does is BOOST ice spawns or etc spawns.

    • Partysaurus Rex

How frequently do you see Ice Pokemon?

I live in Southern California where I have the benefit of being about an hours drive from any given eco dome. That being said, the only one I’ve actually ever seen an increase of any given type is down at the beach (water pokemon).

However, as the events have come out… those eco domes have become pretty irrelevant, as I have been more than capable of filling my pokedex from the comfort of what we affectionately refer to as the armpit of California, where it doesn’t rain, it doesn’t snow. It gets hot, and California Cold (~40 degreees).

The point is, unless you’re actively seeking out specific pokemon types, if you wait long enough, between the events, the raids, and the migrations… if you’re in an area where people play, you’ll catch em all.

      • Xone

I live at pretty much sea level and rarely get snow. But ice types are very common now. So I wonder how this will affect it. Make em even more frequent When it’s cold but not snowing? Bleh. All I want is my Absol.

      • Higher_Ground

It depends… there are no electric type biomes in my city, so they are relatively rare (you’ll get your pokedex filled, but it’ll take some time for evolutions).

Drive 2 hrs away to the next big city and they have tons of electric pokemon.

Water biomes are the most obvious. It makes sense to me as the “biomes” in pokemon tended to be grass/cave/water and since most of us don’t spend a lot of time in tunnels in caves that one can sort of get thrown out.

We get no ice pokemon where I live outside of the Fire & Ice event last summer. The occasional swinub or sneasle nest, but that’s about it. I have all I need – but I’m still only silver on the ice type medal because they spawn so infrequently here.

As long as they have events I’m cool with it. It would actually be pretty neat to drive to the mountains and find lots of ice types.

  • Rob Whitney

Even with this, I wonder if Delibird will start spawning near Christmas? Plus I bet all gen 3 babies will be in to hatch.

    • Tom

      Gen3 only has Wynaut lol

      • Higher_Ground

azuril – and like all other baby pokemon, they will be a disappointment to hatch.

      • Akul Kamble

        Azumarill too

  • Dimas Aditya S

How about the tropical countries which never be snowy at all??

    • Jayden Plays Pokemon GO

Yeah man. I live in Hawaii. ALL WE HAVE IS SUN, RAIN, AND VOG! (Vog is volcanic ash in the air from a recent eruption)

      • Dimas Aditya S

Yes same here in Java, brother. Maybe we’ll just have to wait and see for what will happen next.

        • Felipe Bauer

Here in Brazil we only have sunny and rarely rain.
I was hoping the weathers would be server generated, so they would be the same for everyone.

          • Patrick Terry Jr.

I think it’s better for using real world weather, makes it more real and less boring

      • Higher_Ground

… and two volcanoes with snow every year.

Granted you might not live on the big island but that’s something.

    • Leonard Pointer

Er…. I’m from Scotland. Same argument in reverse. We NEVER have a sunny day…. No, wait. Think we had four in July. That was it. Let’s just see how this goes. Could be amazing.

  • Joe1407

Nice to see gen 3 but with all the new moves, weather back rounds and 50 new pokeymon, any want to bet on how long before the game crashes when the new update is forced on us? I really hope not but, We all have seen it before.

  • Zappy-N

the groudon in the trailer is interesting.. will we get gen 3 raids sooner than we thought?

  • peponzio

Could they be using Open Weather Map data to approximate weather conditions? That would be awesome!

Could we use OWM to track certain weather patterns in the game?

  • CyberBishop1

    Bring it on!!!!!!

  • Austin Tang

    Only 50 gen 3 pokemon?
