Yesterday the gods of public communication blessed us all, as John Hanke (Niantic CEO) directly responded to a Tweet asking that Niantic shuts down all GPS spoofing apps:

TutuApp, FlyGPS and NewGPS! Joystick are all well known apps that were used to fake (mock) players’ GPS location in Pokémon GO.

Fortunately, the March Android Security update disabled most of these apps on various Android versions, however, not everyone decided to update.

Hanke is known to foreshadow upcoming changes and far reaching internal projects by answering community Tweets, but he only does it once every 3-4 months. Last time that Hanke directly answered a similar Tweet, this happened: “Update on Maintaining and Running the Pokémon GO Service”

In other words, Hanke’s response could indicate that Niantic is considering reaching out to these apps and shutting them down. Although, legally speaking, that’s a hard nut to crack.

Apps like FlyGPS and other GPS joystick apps have legitimate use cases and serve various utility purposes for developers, advanced users and users who need to avoid location limited services, paywalls, etc.

Although the use of these apps to cheat and gain unfair advantage in Pokémon GO should be strictly punished by Niantic, it’s hard to see how Niantic could force the devs to take their apps off the market.

What do you think? Should Niantic act legally or fix things on their end?

Let’s address the elephant in the room. Mr. Hankey, the comical terd we all know and love says “thanks for the heads up” and GO Hub goes and makes some click bait about what he finna do cause we all know he takes advice from other people about how to do his job. No wonder we got gen 2 so early lol. Now join me in singing his song but only if you believe!

    “Mr Hankey, The Christmas Poo
Small and Brown, he comes from you
Sit on the toilet, here he comes
Squeeze and tween your festive buns!
    A present from down below
Speading joy with a ‘howdy ho’!
He’s seen the love inside of you
Cos he’s a piece of poo!
Sometimes he’s nutty, sometimes he’s corny
He can be brown, or greenish-brown
But if you eat fibre on Christmas Eve
He might come to your town..
    Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo
He loves me, I love you
    Therefore vicariously, he loves you
‘I can make a Mr Hankey too’!”

        Lol right

  • Alexander Hessler

I’m happy if they shut down spoofing, but I hope they leave trackers alone.

    • Tobias Brüning

trackers are masses of bots, they have to shut down eventually

As an Android developer building apps with GPS functions the likes of Uber, you need these spoofing app to test your app. You can’t expect every developer to travel physically to every corner of the world. But yea spoofers abused it

    • MunichFreak

still there’s no need to hide the information weather the coords are spoofed or not.
You should still be able to fake your gps location but “tell” the app that those are no legit data which are returned.

  • Oscar van der Velde

Pokémon GO should detect unwanted apps running simultaneously and quit if that is the case.

    • Federico Zucchini

It’s tricky: those apps have to be undetectable, logically, otherwise every other app could detect and block them, making them useless. We only see the Pokémon go side, but as shown in the article they serve many purposes.

  • you wish 🙂

Iets sad to see that some people are still trying to cheat with a fun game liek Pokemon Go 🙂
Trackers should also be banned,.. al 3rd party apps,.. Niantic didn’t add these feature’s to Pokemon Go for a reason XD

  • GrrrOfOmicronPersei8

If they shut down spoofing apps on the grounds of it breaking the rules or cheating, then they need to shut down tracking websites/apps and IV calculators too. If one pays attention to the Terms of Service, ALL of those things violate the rules..even websites like this one because of data mining (which is prohibited but it happens anyway) are considered breaking the rules.

I don’t want the stuff shut down because they’re useful. I’d like for there maybe to be some kind of penalty for breaking those rules, like a 80% reduction in experience on the account that is identified with being in violation.

People didn’t like the fact that Niantic changed the in-game tracking feature, so websites and apps popped up. Niantic shutdown a lot of those a while back, but we see them becoming more popular. IV calculating apps have popped up that “unauthorized software” message on some people’s phones because it’s in direct violation of the ToS (hence the message). People don’t like spoofers because it’s more like playing the GameBoy version of Pokemon instead of what PoGo is supposed to be about, but think about those people who love playing the game, but are unable to get out and play due to various disabilities or hindrances..should they get banned because they spoof? Maybe they spend $10 a month or more buying coins to get eggs and incubators because they love playing the game.

Ultimately, everyone has a justification for cheating one way or another..some more understandable than others. Doesn’t change the fact that it is technically cheating, regardless of which of those categories you fall into, and the only “legit” players, by definition in this context, are people who don’t use any third party software or resources to play the game.

GPS spoofing to Pokemon GO 3:0, finish result !!!

  • Ex-player

So i have read these debates of spoofing for long time. No matter which side your on there are valid points for both sides. Too many people argue a blqck and white arguement. But truth is there is alot of grey. I myself am neutral to it all. Its a game to play and have fun. But after doing alot of digging i am unhappy. I live where there are 8 p.stops only within about 8mile range. After that i have drive my family 30 mins. To a city with more. But i thought this isnt fun unless your in a city due to most pokimon are near stops. Well i checked out a scanner site for a city and i noticed all the variety there but also i realized that the rare ones spawn 1 out of 20 near a stop. I thought thats great because that would mean i dont have to be in a city for my kids or i to catch a variety or rares. Then i checked out a site that lets you do scans where ever i choose on a map. So i started scanning my lil town. I ended up using 3 pcs and constant scanning. What i found there were very few spawn spots and most were near by the p. Stops or the couple gyms. I tested several small towns and large cities. My results are the spawn spots are just like p. Stops and gym. What this tells me is they game caters to the heavy populated areas and reason for this? Its money. Yes the company loves their game and wants to make a game for ppl to enjoy but its to make money. Thats the bottom line. Census of 2010 is 95% of U.S. is rural area. But only 19%(59.5 million) of U.S. population lives in rural. One day they will do more im sure to get that revenue too. So im done with my kids and i sick of catching rats, pidgys, natus, wooper, and spineraks. So we quit the game. Personally they need stop fighting spoofing and find a way to block it while putting in there own way to spoof with limits. Like no gym battling and greatly reduced p. Stop rewards. That would allow the population in rural areas or disabled or sick stuck in hospitals to adventure to cities and other countries to catch pokimon. But thats just my opinion. Final truth for ppl that say they hate cheating and cheaters. By definition and info or tool used to help you with the game is cheating, i.e. trackers, scanners, and even this site that gives you helpful info. So stop raging about cheating. Rage about how a small % of spoofers ruin the fun by dominating the gyms. Protest the rewarding of gyms . Get niantac to remove those coin rewards on gyms. Restrict ppl to 1 or 2 gyms

  • WhiskeyPunisher

Don’t let spoofers put pokemon in gyms and you will fix all the issues.
