in today’s news roundup we’ve got three interesting news items to report on. It’s been a fairly slow week following the smashing success of Ho-Oh’s surprise release, but there are still interesting tidbits of info to report on.

Glossary: OSM — OpenStreetMap, the free wiki world map.

Say goodbye to Legendary Beasts, for now

First off, we should no longer be seeing the Legendary Beast trio — RaikouSuicune and Entei are no longer appearing in the wild. As confirmed by players in regions where raids have already started, the Legendary Raid Egg now only hatches the Ho-Oh raid boss.

We were debating internally if this is the last time we’ll see the Legendary Beast Trio appear in the game and our official speculative opinion is that the Beasts will return — eventually. In every Pokémon core game series, a subset of previous Legendaries is available for capture. We see no reason why this wouldn’t be reproduced in Pokémon GO.

In-game map using more and more OpenStreetMap data, USA Google map provided streets replaced by OSM

As we’ve already reported yesterday, the in-game map is slowly looking more and more like the OpenStreetMap’s version of the worldwide map. Today, reddit was on fire with dozens of players reporting that huge portions of the USA map were no longer based on Google data, but on OpenStreetMap data!

A redditor named ss_reddit333 posted this image on The Silph Road, only to be followed by a stream of comments confirming his observation. Huge portions of the USA in-game map are now based on the OSM map:

In-game USA map replaced no longer based on Google Maps, uses OpenStreetMap now

We know that Niantic is using the OSM data set to create Nests, pick gyms eligible for EX raids and influence the overall game behaviour. Replacing the actual map with OSM’s map is just another step in gradually phasing out Google maps completely. It’s our belief that Niantic wants to specialise in using the OpenStreetMap data across all of their products.

From a development standpoint, it makes perfect sense, as correlating two data sets is always more difficult than using just one. From a financial standpoint, OSM is free, so it’s a no brainer really.

If you’ve been a long time Hub reader, you might have read our How to find Nests and possible Spawns guide, published on September 29, 2016. That guide is now even more relevant, as it enables quick scanning of your nearby potential nests. Give it a spin!

Karlovac (croatia) map updated, but there is a huge empty block in the middle of the city vwhere is a main road and lot of pokestops, parks, bus a rail station. I got pictures but dont know where to post them

  • Pablo Nicolas Di Pietro

The maps in Ingress had changed too

  • I hope they bring the beasts back also the birds. Not everyone got all of them.

I was making some counting, including gen 3, which should “gradually” come out this month, there will be 21 legendary pokemon.

4 legendary trios (the birds, the beasts, the regis, the weather), 2 legendary duos (the tower birds, and the eon pokemon), 4 mythical pokemon (mew, celebi, jirachi, deoxys) and mewtwo.

If every legendary pokemon were to stay for one week as legendary raid boss it would take more than 4 months to cycle. Though we’d have to exclude mewtwo, mew, celebi, jirachi, and possibly deoxys and rayquaza for EX raids.

In mexico the mobile provider that has a Pokemon Go Plan (Weex), give free access to google maps, so this morning the map was never load. I hope they change the access to OSM (But I’m going to lose the free google searches) and I beg that Weex don’t down his Pokemon GO plan.

    • DethEngineer

I use AT&T Mexico, the map changed but it loads just fine

      • Ksee Rauzen Lifshit

  • Jayden Plays Pokemon GO

Don’t have any screenshots but yesterday I looked at the map and said, “Why is something so different?” Later that night I realized that turned a close park into the “park patch” (dark green grass) and removed all houses

  • Mats Rundqvist

There used to be houses, roads here, where I live. Now – nothing. I looked at OpenStreetMap and, yes, it’s the same there. OSM is obviously just crap for rural areas. This is really going to be fun – not!

    • peponzio

There is supposed to be a safety measure for private properties so residential areas are not shown in OSM. Google maps has no problem sharing the general geometries of all buildings regardless of ownership, you know so anyone can know how to move between houses in private properties.

But it is also probable that OSM does not have your area as mapped as Google Maps. Give and take.

      • Mats Rundqvist

You’re probably right, so I think i’ll just quit playing. They just took the fun out of the game for me.

        • Hee Chan Chae

          start spoofing :S

  • Robdebobrob

New “wave” of EX-raids here again. 3 people known so far. Its a gym a friend and me raided on 5+ times passed few weeks. 2 guys who hadnt done any raids in a while raided with us today. Both have never recieved a EX-raid pass before. 1 of them got it, the other didnt. My friend and me didnt get any either, but we both already have a Mewtwo so thats ok. It still seems very random tough. Both the guys who didnt raid a while had the gym bronze.

I was excited for the “new” way Niantic was gonna hand out passes, but it just still seems random..

  • Gekkie

So now we should download the OSM app and download maps there to save mobile data? It used to work like that with Google Maps if you’d turn on the Battery Save mode in PoGo right?

    • Kevin Stratigis

No this doesnt work and a niantic worker said in the beginning of pogo that google maps –
offline maps doesnt save any mobile data.

  • LuckyfighterGO

can u make a top defenders and attackers list including generation 3??

    • Michal Hušák

Have a look at pokebattler com an create yourself whatever list you want.

  • Jack Cheng

    Better map for Chilung Taiwan

  • Slick01Nick

Just wanted to say east side of Baltimore County Maryland. The maps have changed. Not so friendly anymore missing roadways missing parks and houses. The new maps suck. If this is the way the game is going to be we’re not going to play.

  • Dazzad

They should make the legendaries available in a new 25km egg. The eggs could be fairly rare but nonetheless a way of getting these Pokémon for players that missed out in raids

    • Hedronal

Doesn’t that just take luck to get though? I feel like the legendaries should be around as some sort of quest goal.
