Pokemon GO Celebi quest (A Ripple in Time) is a Special Research quest chain that leads to discovering the mythical Pokemon Celebi in Pokemon GO. The quest has eight steps with multiple interactions with Professor Willow along the way. This page lists all of the tasks and rewards for the Celebi Quest and answers one important question: how to get Celebi in Pokémon GO.
Spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned.
List of steps to unlock Celebi in Pokemon GO
A Ripple in Time step 1 of 8
- Power up Pokemon 5 times (1000 XP)
- Battle in a Gym 2 times (1000 XP)
- Battle in a raid (1000 XP)
Trainer, you’ve been such a help in conducting Field Research and Special Research! I have a feeling that there’s so much more about this world that we’ve yet to discover, and I’m glad I can count on you to see it through. I’ve been doing some experiments of my own, and I suspect that I’m onto a further exciting discovery about another Mythical Pokémon that’s rarely seen. Would you mind completing these tasks while I conclude my studies
|10x Pokeballs||1x Fast TM||1x Super Incubator|
A Ripple in Time step 2 of 8
- Make 3 new friends (1500 XP)
- Evolve an evolved Grass-type Pokemon (1500 XP)
- Catch a Pokemon 3 days in a row (1500 XP)
Wow, you and your Pokémon have some amazing power! But according to my most recent data, it seems that the Mythical Pokémon I’m tracking only appears in times of peace. Also, from what I’ve gathered, it seems fond of forests and lush greens. Would you mind exploring this further, Trainer?
Helpful notes: Evolved grass types that evolve again are: Ivysaur, Grovyle, Bayleef, Weepinbell, Lombre, Nuzleaf, Skiploom, and Gloom.
|1x Sun Stones||1500 Stardust||1x Premium Raid Pass|
A Ripple in Time step 3 of 8
- Use a Sun Stone to evolve Gloom or Sunkern (2000 XP)
- Reach Level 25 (2000 XP)
- Hatch 9 eggs (2000 XP)
Excellent work, Trainer! I feel we’re getting closer to this Mythical Pokémon. I wonder if we can find some more friends for it by hatching some Eggs. Ah, and maybe you could put that Sun Stone you’ve earned to good use as well?
Helpful notes: Apart from the one you’ll have received for completing Stage 2, Sun Stones and other evolution items are gained from your 7th day streak of Pokestop (or gym) spins, or as random rare drops from Pokestops (or gyms). They are also currently available from the Field Research task “Catch 3 Sunkern”.
|1x King’s Rock||Eevee encounter||1x Premium Raid Pass|
A Ripple in Time step 4 of 8
- Evolve Eevee into Espeon during the day (2500 XP)
- Walk 10 km with Eevee as your buddy to earn Candy (2500 XP)
- Send 20 gifts to Friends (2500 XP)
Oh wow, is that an Eevee you’ve caught? Perfect timing! Did you know that this Pokémon’s unstable genetic makeup enables it to take on one of several different Evolutions? I’ll bet if you spend some time with it during the day, you’ll be able to evolve your Eevee into an Espeon—a Psychic-type Pokémon just like the Mythical Pokémon I’m researching!
Helpful notes: You have to gain 2 buddy candies from walking 10km with an Eevee, while this stage of the quest is active, to be able to evolve it into Espeon. Any candies gained before starting this stage won’t count towards your progress (same applies to Eevee into Umbreon for stage 5). Also, if you change your buddy part way through the task, you will have to start that 5km again and walk further than 10km in total, to gain the two candies.
|1x Metal Coat||Eevee encounter||2500 Stardust|
A Ripple in Time step 5 of 8
- Walk 10 km with Eevee as your buddy to earn Candy (3000 XP)
- Evolve Eevee into Umbreon at night (3000 XP)
- Trade a Pokémon (3000 XP)
Oh wow, is that an Eevee you’ve caught? Perfect timing!
Wait… Have we…had this conversation already? I’m getting a funny feeling in the back of my mind—like we’ve been here before. Trainer, would you spend some time with this Eevee during the night? I think you’ll be able to see an intriguing evolved form as a result. I wonder if this funny feeling will recur…
Helpful notes: You have to gain 2 buddy candies from walking 10km with an Eevee, while this stage of the quest is active, to be able evolve it into Umbreon. Any candies gained before starting this stage won’t count towards your progress. Also, if you change your buddy part way through the task, you will have to start that 5 km again and walk further than 10km in total, to gain the two candies.
|1x Star Piece||15x Pinap Berry||1x Upgrade|
A Ripple in Time step 6 of 8
- Visit PokéStops 7 days in a row (3500 XP)
- Use 25 Pinap Berries while catching Pokémon (3500 XP)
- Use items to evolve Pokémon 2 times (3500 XP)
Trainer, I have some exciting news! That funny feeling hasn’t returned, but I did some important reading and learned that the Mythical Pokémon we’re researching has the ability to travel across time! Maybe that’s why all of this is occurring…or recurring… Maybe this Pokémon is nearby?!
I suggest that you collect samples over the course of the next week and experiment with some Evolution items to see whether that feeling occurs again. While you’re at it, do you have any Pinap Berries? My research could benefit from more data on their use. Return with that, and you can have these exotic Silver Pinap Berries!
Helpful notes: Pokemon that evolve using an item are: Gloom, Sunkern, Slowpoke, Poliwhirl, Onix, Scyther, Seadra, and Porygon. While you should already have all 5 Evolution items from these task rewards, they can also currently be gained from the Field Research task “Catch 3 Sunkern”. You can also get one from your 7th day streak of pokestop (or gym) spins, or as random rare drops from pokestops (or gyms).
|5x Silver Pinap Berry||1x Dragon Scale||3500 Stardust|
Celebi quest step 7 of 8
- Catch 40 Grass– or Psychic-type Pokémon (4000 XP)
- Make an Excellent Curve Throw (4000 XP)
- Earn a gold Johto medal (4000 XP)
This data is so helpful. Thank you! I’ll use it to explore my theory. While you were in the field, I made more headway in learning about this Mythical Pokémon, and it seems that its mere presence causes grass and trees to flourish. I think if you catch more Grass-type Pokémon, this elusive time-traveling Pokémon will reveal itself!
|10x Silver Pinap Berry||1x Charge TM||Celebi encounter|
A Ripple in Time 8/8
- Unknown #1 (auto completed quest, 4500 XP)
- Unknown #2 (auto completed quest, 4500 XP)
- Unknown #3 (auto completed quest, 4500 XP)
Trainer, what an amazing experience! The appearance of the Mythical Pokémon Celebi is thought to be a sign that a bright and shining future awaits us. You’ve come a long way in your research, and I must say you’re inspiring me to discover even more Pokémon. Until next time, Trainer!

About Celebi in the meta game
Celebi is not a viable Pokemon in the Pokemon GO meta, as one can imagine from it’s move set. Celebi is a Grass and Psychic type with no Grass moves, and a bizarre addition of Charge Beam Electric as one of it’s fast moves.
Stat wise, Celebi has wonderfully rounded stats (similar to every other mythical Pokemon), but it’s move set is simply too weak to be usable in any scenario. Potentially, you can use him as a double Psychic attacker versus Machamp.
