Coalossal in the Pokémon GO Meta: Is it Worth the Grind?

Trainers! it’s just been a month into the new Pokémon GO Season: Precious Paths; and with the start of the Winter Holiday Event Part 2, we will have a third new Pokémon line joining the game — Rolycoly, Carkol, and Coalossal. And honestly? This one has the potential to just be the best of the bunch. Let’s break down how Coalossal stacks up in both PvE and PvP, and why you might want to keep an eye on it going forward.

Coalossal, the towering Rock Fire type Pokémon, was introduced in Generation 8 with the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield. It embodies the raw power of Galar’s coal mines and is the final evolution of Rolycoly. Its dual typing means Coalossal has a pretty decent number of resistances: 7 different types, including double resistance to Fire. But the same typing also brings double weakness to 2 different types in Water and Ground

Coalossal in Pokémon GO PvE

Raid icon Raids

While Coalossal’s design and lore can fire up any trainer’s enthusiasm, its PvE performance doesn’t quite match the heat, and it looks more like a dim ember. Coalossal struggles in raids due to its relatively low Attack stat and maximum CP, which keeps it from competing with established Rock and Fire powerhouses like Rampardos, Rhyperior and Blaziken, or even budget attackers like Gigalith and Delphox. If your focus is clearing raid bosses efficiently, Coalossal is best left sitting out.

Max Particle icon Max Battles

Coalossal boasts a powerful Gigantamax form that can unleash its exclusive G-Max Move, G-Max Volcalith — a Rock type G-Max attack. Interestingly, among all the 32 species of Pokémon having a G-Max form, Coalossal is the only one with a Rock-type G-Max move. This unique trait makes Gigantamax Coalossal especially valuable in Max Raid Battles where the boss Pokémon is weak to Rock attacks. But, because of its low Attack stat, G-Max Coalossal still does get outclassed. The table below shows the simulation of G-Max Charizard Max Battle:

As you can see, despite Charizard’s rather infamous weakness to Rock, G-Max Coalossal still lags behind G-Max Inteleon and Dynamaxed Omastar. As you need only one Attacker during Max Battles, G-Max Coalossal sadly is reduced to a dex-filler or as a back-up option.

Coalossal in Pokémon GO PvP

Ideal Moveset: Fire Spin Fire type icon + Rock Slide Rock type icon & Flame Charge Fire type icon

Time for the Coal Pokémon to shine like a diamond. Coalossal is basically a walking volcano in an armour. It stands out as a bulky Rock Fire type with access to pretty strong moves. Fire Spin is a decent fast move with average energy generation and damage which can be further ramped up by Flame Charge. Rock slide on the other hand is a good coverage charge move. It loves going up against Steel and Flying. Just make sure to keep it away from Water and Ground types.

Great League icon Great League

In PvP, especially Great League, it shows potential as an anti-meta contender. Its solid bulk, decent coverage, and unique Rock Fire typing allows it to handle several major threats effectively. It does great against Scizor, Corviknight, and Doublade — Pokémon that hate facing anything fiery or rocky. On the flip side, you’ll struggle against things like Sealeo, Florges or Marowak; exploiting its double weakness to Ground and Water.

Rock Blast is a viable alternative to Rock Slide. In 1v1 shield scenario it gains wins against Galarian Corsola and Morpeko, at the cost of losing to Ludicolo. It gains a few more wins in 2v2 shield scenario, but at the same time loses a lot more in zero shield scenario.

Coalossal’s ideal IV spread for Great League is 1/15/14, 1500 CP, Level 24.5.

Ultra League icon Ultra League

Coalossal’s performance in Ultra League slides towards a downward trajectory. Even so, its typing and stamina allow it to pressure popular Steel and Flying types like Forretress, Tinkaton and Corviknight effectively while still maintaining respectable coverage. Of course its double weakness again catches up against the likes of EmpoleonFeraligatr and Gastrodon

It is important to note a couple of things: Unlike in Great League, Rock Blast is not a viable alternative in Ultra League. Its performance dips slightly with new losses in any shield scenario. Also, Coalossal is expensive to build with massive XL candy requirement.

Coalossal’s ideal IV spread for Ultra League is 6/14/14, 2500 CP, Level 50.

Master League icon Master League

In Master League, 2659 max CP simply isn’t enough; it falls far below the expectations of the tier with way more losses than wins. It can be safely ignored outside of meme or spice teams.

What the Future Holds!

Before talking about the future, lets talk a bit about the past. Coalossal recently lost out Incinerate with the addition of Fire Spin as its fast move. Just by simply adding Incinerate back, in any future move update, its performance shows a pretty solid improvement with additional wins in Great League like Sealeo and Lickilicky. In Ultra League some of the additional wins will include Shadow Walrein and Giratina (Altered)

There’s also a good chance we’ll see a Rolycoly Community Day down the line, possibly featuring Coalossal’s signature move, Tar Shot — a Rock type attack that could seriously power up its PvP game. If the move gets solid stats or added utility, Coalossal might move from “pretty good” to “must-have.”

Conclusion

While Coalossal might not make headlines in raids, its PvP potential easily makes it one of the most impactful new additions this season. If you’re looking to add depth and unpredictability to your Great or Ultra League roster, Coalossal is definitely worth investing in — and it might only get better from here.

That’s it Trainers! Stay Safe and Happy Holidays!
