How good is Shadow Palkia for Pokémon GO Raids?

Pokémon GO July 2026 is off to a flying start with the powerful Shadow Palkia taking over Shadow Raids in Pokémon GO. Palkia, unlike Dialga, has always been associated with PvE functionality more than PvP. So, how does this popular Legendary fare in the current meta, especially with the Dragon prospects looking absolutely stellar with Mega Baxcalibur in game, and Mega Zygarde set to debut eventually?

Let’s first have a look at Shadow Palkia’s stats and movepool, and then move to its standing in the meta.

Shadow Palkia Overview

While Palkia has base 280 ATK and 215 DEF, Shadow Palkia gets a 1.2x buff to its Attack and a 0.83x nerf to its Defense. As such, Shadow Palkia effectively has 336 ATK and ~179 DEF. Being a Dragon/Water type, Shadow Palkia is not weak to Fairy and even resists Steel, a welcome departure from usual Dragon Pokémon.

Finally, in the Main Series Games, Palkia doesn’t learn any of the Water-type moves available as Fast Attacks in Pokémon GO. This is why despite its incredible stats, Shadow Palkia doesn’t really fit in the role of a Water-type attacker. Of course, heavily resisting Fire and not taking super-effective damage from Ice (a common move type among Water Pokémon) does qualify Shadow Palkia as a usable attacker, but you should only go ahead with this in large Raid groups or in battles where victory seems quick and easy.

Now, let’s find out how strong a Dragon Shadow Palkia is!

Shadow Palkia in the Dragon Meta

Taking the help of our GO Hub DPS Comparer Tool:

best dragon types in pokemon go with shadow haxorus and shadow palkia

Shadow Palkia is among the best Shadow Dragon type in Pokémon GO, dealing a meagre 0.64% more damage than good ol’ Shadow Salamence. However, its damage numbers hit harder than Origin Forme Palkia by an appreciable 6%. The best Shadow Dragon is obviously the mighty Shadow Haxorus, leading Shadow Palkia by 6.38% in damage.

The Legendaries that overtake Shadow Palkia in DPS are not feasible for a good number of trainers. For instance, only a handful of trainers would have a level 50 Eternatus; Zygarde is also not available to all, and we will have to wait and see how its Mega becomes accessible. Even though Mega Rayquaza is more accessible, some trainers may not have a Meteorite.

So what truly challenges Shadow Palkia in practical utility is a bunch of Pseudo Legendaries, and of course, Shadow Haxorus (which is not a Pseudo). Shadow Haxorus is still on everyone’s radar, Baxcalibur had a Community Day with Glaive Rush up for grabs in June 2026, and Mega Garchomp has been a mainstay after Mega Rayquaza, with Breaking Swipe not even requiring an Elite Charged TM.

Even among non-Pseudos, Shadow Haxorus takes the cake (even edging out Pseudo Legendary Shadows in DPS), although it requires a well-deserved Elite Charged TM to unlock Breaking Swipe.

Ultimately, the real comparison for Shadow Palkia is also a Pseudo Legendary (‘Mence), but one that operates with the same moveset, inflicts nearly the same DPS, and most importantly, is also a Shadow Pokémon.

Shadow Palkia or Shadow Salamence: Which to use?

shadow palkia and shadow salamence in pokemon go

With the same moveset and similar DPS, you couldn’t have asked for a better draconic standoff! Now, Shadow Palkia deals more DPS, and with better bulk and a more impressive defensive profile, the Legendary seems to take the home run. But Shadow Salamence has something that has given it bragging rights from time to time. In the event that Shadow Palkia/Shadow Salamence is about to faint and is unable to fire off the much-needed Draco Meteor, the Legendary has no option but to use its ineffective Aqua Tail, which Dragon types resist.

On the other hand, Shadow Salamence can resort to one of the most reliable and classic moves in a Dragon Pokémon’s arsenal: Outrage. Indeed, Salamence wields both Draco Meteor and Outrage, and when Draco Meteor seems so close and yet so far, Outrage is a powerful alternative which actually ends up making Shadow Salamence one of the deadliest Dragon-type attackers in the meta.

This was just battle mechanics, but also consider that Shadow Salamence is cheaper to power up, and its Candy is way more accessible than Palkia Candy is. However, when the comparison goes to the newly added bully, Shadow Haxorus, Shadow Salamence pales in utility as Breaking Swipe alone beats the Outrage | Draco Meteor combo. But taking Shadow Palkia into account, Shadow Salamence is clearly better in overall effectiveness during Raids, and also in the cost of powering up.

Even though it is outclassed in several parameters, it goes without saying that Shadow Palkia is strong. It’s definitely worth having one in your team, and even powering up to an extent if you end up bagging a 100 IV. But if you have a 100 IV Shadow Salamence as well, or if your Shadow Salamence’s IVs are higher than your Shadow Palkia, then invest in your Pseudo Legendary without a second thought.

Of course, it is even wiser to invest in Mega Garchomp and/or Baxcalibur for the future Mega Evolution, and also the insanely strong Legendary Dragons that take up the top slots of this heavily contested type in Pokémon GO.

All the best and happy hunting!
