Trainers, it is finally happening, Mega Mewtwo is set to debut during Pokémon GO Fest 2026 to celebrate 10 years of Pokémon GO!
Mewtwo will be able to Mega Evolve, including ones you have already caught! Mewtwo will be able to Mega Evolve into Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y.
Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are exceptionally powerful Pokémon that require much more Mega Energy than other Pokémon to Mega Evolve.
This energy will become available for the first time from Mega Mewtwo Super Mega Raids during Pokémon GO Fest 2026.
As a special bonus with its debut during Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global, every Mega Mewtwo caught from Super Mega Raids will also have at least one Mega Level already unlocked and can be Mega Evolved without the initial energy cost. If you’re lucky, it might even be at Mega Level 2 or 3!
Mega Mewtwo has two different forms, Mega Mewtwo X and Y. Each has different stats:

Mega Mewtwo X Energy and Mega Mewtwo Y Energy are rare resources that can be used to Mega Evolve Mewtwo into either of its two powerful temporary forms.
You can earn Mega Mewtwo X and Y energy in two different ways:
Trainers who attend in-person GO Fest events this year can get early access to either Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y. The City Experience in Tokyo, Chicago, and Copenhagen includes branching Timed Research that awards an encounter with Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y that have the first Mega Level already unlocked.
Trainers who attend the Park Session can also take on Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y at the end of their park session. More communication about the location within the park will be shared closer to the event.
Starting during Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global, you’ll be able to collect these rare types of energy by defeating Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y in Super Mega Raid Battles. During Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global, Mega Mewtwo X will appear in Super Mega Raids on Saturday while Mega Mewtwo Y will appear on Sunday.
Mewtwo caught from Super Mega Battles will have at least one Mega Level already unlocked. If you’re lucky, it might even be at Mega Level 2 or 3!
- Defeat Mega Mewtwo X in Super Mega Raids to get the energy you need to Mega Evolve Mewtwo into Mega Mewtwo X.
- Defeat Mega Mewtwo Y in Super Mega Raids to get the energy you need to Mega Evolve Mewtwo into Mega Mewtwo Y.
Mega Mewtwo’s arrival isn’t the only big thing coming to Mega Evolution in Pokémon GO, there are also updates to the Mega Evolution system.
In an upcoming update, Trainers will have the option to use their extra Mega Energy to quickly level up their Pokémon’s Mega Levels without needing to wait for the daily progression cooldown.
For Pokémon with multiple Mega Evolutions, such as Mewtwo, progression will now be tracked individually for each Mega Evolution. For example, the Mega Level for Mega Mewtwo X will increase independently from the Mega Level for Mega Mewtwo Y.
- For Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y, any Charizard that you have Mega Evolved will carry over its Mega Level to both Mega Evolutions after this split.
- Charizard’s Mega Evolutions will also require separate Mega Energy going forward, which you can get from taking on either Mega Charizard X or Mega Charizard Y in Mega Raids.
- If you already have Charizard Mega Energy, you will be awarded that amount of both Mega Charizard X Energy and Mega Charizard Y Energy after this split.
All Mewtwo caught during in-person GO Fest events by ticket holders will know the Fast Attack Counter and the Charged Attack Psystrike. During in-person GO Fest events, only ticket holders can catch Mewtwo with the featured attacks.
During GO Fest: Global each version of Mewtwo can be caught with different attacks:
- Mewtwo caught from Mega Mewtwo X Super Mega raids will know the Fast Attack Counter Fighting.
- Mewtwo caught from Mega Mewtwo Y Super Mega raids will know the Charged Attack Psystrike Psychic.
Trainers who have tickets to in-person GO Fest events—either the full GO Fest ticket or the City Explorer ticket—will receive four Timed Research opportunities on their first day of city gameplay. Each Timed Research is a Trainer Challenge based in one of four City Districts, focusing on a different aspect of becoming a great Pokémon GO Trainer.
Each Trainer Challenge will award a unique medal commemorating the accomplishment. Trainers will need to explore at least two City Districts and complete the Trainer Challenge there to achieve the in-game Pokémon GO Expert medal. Only Trainers attending the in-person Pokémon GO Fest events will be able to complete the Timed Research and earn this special commemorative in-game medal.
The Pokémon GO Expert medal requires Trainers to physically explore each host city through Pokémon GO and complete the Trainer Challenge associated with each City District.
If a Trainer completes at least two Trainer Challenges, they can choose to encounter either Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y with its first Mega Level unlocked.
Trainers playing in the same GO Fest city on multiple days will get only one set of Timed Research (including the bonus Timed Research) and rewards.
Trainers playing in different GO Fest cities will get one set of Timed Research (including the bonus Timed Research) and rewards per city—up to three sets total. The City Experience Timed Research will be active for the duration of each event at the times listed below:
- Pokémon GO Fest: Tokyo – Monday, May 25, at 12:00 a.m. through Monday, June 1, at 11:59 p.m. local time
- Pokémon GO Fest: Chicago – Thursday, June 4, at 12:00 a.m. through Sunday, June 7, at 11:59 p.m. local time
- Pokémon GO Fest: Copenhagen – Thursday, June 11, at 12:00 a.m. through Sunday, June 14, at 11:59 p.m. local time
Ticket-holding Pokémon GO Fest attendees are invited to join a Super Mega Raid at the end of their ticketed park session. For the last thirty minutes of the Park Experience, new Gyms will appear that allow over one thousand Trainers to take on Mega Mewtwo together.
Both Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y will appear during this part of the event. Mewtwo caught from the Super Mega Raids will have a Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Location Background and the first Mega Level unlocked. If you’re lucky, it might even be at Mega Level 2 or 3.
Super Mega Raids will take great teamwork and may only appear at certain Gyms, so Pokémon GO are aiming to making it easier to find nearby Gyms, Power Spots, and more using a new web-based map. Previously we have primarily seen Super Mega Raids focused in parks.
You can visit pokemongo.com/map to view both upcoming and ongoing Super Mega Raids. You can also filter the map to only show certain types of events.
For the first time, you’ll also be able to view nearby community meetups through the map. If you’ve never attended a meetup before, Super Mega Raids are a great reason to go out and meet your local community of Trainers.
