Trainers, Niantic has shared two cryptic blog posts on their official website, teasing the imminent arrival of Morpeko, the Pokémon that can change form in battle, and teasing the Dynamax mechanic, which was already heavily data mined (assets, texts, more).
Something hungry is coming
In a blog post titled “Something hungry is coming”, Niantic shared the following:
Trainers
Coming soon: Morpeko will charge into Pokémon GO, changing the way you battle! Certain Pokémon—like Morpeko—will be able to change form in battle by using a Charged Attack, unleashing new possibilities for you and your battle team. Stay tuned for more details on the Two-Sided Pokémon’s electrifying entrance!
Commentary
For those who are not aware – and we were not aware as well – this seems to be a pretty big deal, paving the way for the introduction of Pokémon like Mimikyu, or Aegislash, or Zen Form Darmanitan. A friendly redditor explained how Morpeko works:
“This is actually huge. Not abilities per se, but this makes me think they may actually try to bring over Mimikyu’s Disguise ability and Aegislash’s Stance Change ability. Who knows for sure, but this is exciting!
For those who don’t know how Morpeko works, using Aura Wheel Changes it to “Hangry Mode” and back after using it again. When in Hangry Mode, the Electric Move becomes a Dark type move. So it’s pretty much just switching that move’s type, but that’s still super interesting. That said, Morpeko is a glassy Pokemon lol”
This does look like a start of something pretty exciting! Form changes and abilities! But alas, let’s not rush to conclusions and see how Morpeko works first, and then we can go onboard the hype train.

Not much to comment here – we’ve known for a while now that the next season is going to be all about Dynamax/Gigantamax Pokémon, and the info has been popping all over the data mines. Niantic is now officially going for it, and with the next season starting on September 3, 2024, we are quite interested to see how the feature will work fully.
