GO Wild Area 2026 Brings Trainer Backgrounds, Private Dynamax Battles, and More

New Trainer profile backgrounds, private Max Battle groups, exclusive Research bonuses, and avatar rewards arrive ahead of GO Wild Area 2026.

Pokémon GO has revealed a fresh batch of details for GO Wild Area 2026, including the ability to show Pokémon backgrounds on Trainer profiles (yes!!!), private Dynamax Battle groups, new Special Research bonuses, and several avatar items.

The updates arrive just ahead of GO Wild Area: Mexico City and GO Wild Area: Sendai, which take place from November 6–8, 2026. The adventure continues worldwide with GO Wild Area: Global on November 14–15, 2026.

Here is everything new that Trainers should know before the event begins.

What’s new for GO Wild Area 2026?

  • Postcards icon Location Backgrounds and Special Backgrounds can now appear on Trainer profiles
  • Dynamax icon Private groups are coming to Dynamax Battles
  • Catch Cup icon Steel Scholar and Dragon Defender medals unlock special Mighty Pokémon catch bonuses
  • Pass Point icon New GO Pass rewards, avatar items, and an exclusive pose
  • Safari Balls icon Pokémon caught in GO Safari Balls can now be transferred to Pokémon HOME
  • Battle icon Select Adventure Effects can be activated directly from Raid and Max Battle lobbies

Pokémon Backgrounds Are Coming to Trainer Profiles

Starting with GO Wild Area 2026, Trainers will be able to display their Buddy Pokémon’s Location Background or Special Background on their Trainer profile. These backgrounds will also be visible to friends, giving Trainers a new way to show off Pokémon caught during special events and memorable adventures.

The feature will roll out in stages:

  • November 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. local time – Sendai and Mexico City GO Wild Area 2026 Location Backgrounds become available to display
  • November 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. local time – The GO Wild Area 2026 Special Background and all previously released Location Backgrounds become available to display

Additional Special Backgrounds will be supported in the future.

The feature unlocks according to each Trainer’s local time. Friends will not be able to see your Buddy Pokémon’s background until the feature has reached its scheduled unlock time in their own time zone.

Private Dynamax Battles Are Finally Here

One of the biggest gameplay improvements arriving with GO Wild Area is the ability to join Dynamax Battles privately.

Previously, entering a Max Battle lobby would automatically match Trainers with other participants. Starting with GO Wild Area 2026, Trainers will have two options when joining a battle:

  • Dynamax icon Battle: Automatically match with other players in the lobby
  • Dynamax icon Private Group: Enter a group code to join an existing private Max Battle group

This should make it easier for coordinated groups to tackle difficult Max Battles without being automatically matched with other players.

The change arrives just in time for Gigantamax Duraludon, Dynamax Dialga, and Dynamax Palkia, all of which are featured during GO Wild Area 2026.

Steel Scholar and Dragon Defender Medal Bonuses

Ticket-holding Trainers participating in GO Wild Area: Global will receive a branching Special Research story starting on November 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. local time.

Trainers must choose between researching Steel-type or Dragon-type Pokémon. Each path awards a corresponding in-game medal and unlocks special bonuses for catching mighty Pokémon of that type.

Steel Scholar Medal

Trainers who earn the Steel Scholar medal will unlock:

  • Candy icon 1 additional Candy XL when catching Steel-type mighty Pokémon (Trainer level 31+)
  • Stardust icon 1,000 additional Stardust when catching Steel-type mighty Pokémon

Dragon Defender Medal

Trainers who earn the Dragon Defender medal will unlock:

  • Candy icon 1 additional Candy XL when catching Dragon-type mighty Pokémon (Trainer level 31+)
  • Stardust icon 1,000 additional Stardust when catching Dragon-type mighty Pokémon

The bonuses activate after claiming the corresponding medal, rather than immediately upon choosing a Research path.

Both sets of bonuses expire when GO Wild Area: Global ends on November 15, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. local time.

Unlike Global participants, ticket-holding Trainers attending Sendai or Mexico City will have the opportunity to earn both medals through their in-person event Special Research, unlocking both sets of bonuses until the conclusion of the Global event.

These items will remain available in the in-game shop after GO Wild Area concludes.

GO Wild Area 2026 Avatar Pose

Ticket-holding Trainers who complete their event Special Research during the in-person GO Wild Area events or GO Wild Area: Global will receive an exclusive new avatar pose.

GO Safari Ball Pokémon Can Now Be Transferred to Pokémon HOME

There is also good news for collectors!

Pokémon caught using GO Safari Balls can now be transferred from Pokémon GO to Pokémon HOME.

Once transferred, their GO Safari Ball will appear as a Strange Ball in Pokémon HOME.

This means Pokémon caught during GO Wild Area using these special Poké Balls are no longer excluded from Pokémon HOME transfers simply because of the Ball they were caught in.

Adventure Effects Can Be Activated in Battle Lobbies

Starting with the Into the Wild event, Trainers will be able to activate select Adventure Effects while waiting in a Raid or Max Battle lobby.

This includes Adventure Effects associated with:

  • Event icon Crowned Sword Zacian's Behemoth Blade
  • Event icon Crowned Shield Zamazenta's Behemoth Bash

Instead of activating an Adventure Effect before joining a lobby, Trainers can prepare their bonuses while assembling their battle group.

Ticket-holding Trainers attending the in-person GO Wild Area events in Sendai and Mexico City will receive early access to this functionality.

GO Wild Area 2026 Event Maps and Add-Ons

Trainers attending the in-person events can now preview the official event maps to help plan their routes, stops, and activities. The maps and location information are available on the official event pages:

  • Event icon Sendai • Tohoku — Official event map and in-person experiences
  • Event icon Mexico City — Official event information and in-person experiences

Official event pages: Sendai • Tohoku | Mexico City

Additional event ticket add-ons are also still available for eligible attendees. These provide various gameplay bonuses, additional gameplay days, and merchandise preorder options.

Ticket add-on bonuses are active from November 6 through November 8, 2026, allowing eligible Trainers to benefit throughout the in-person event weekend.
