With the start of Pokémon GO’s Halloween 2023 event, Spiritomb can be obtained in Pokémon GO once again! As Spiritomb is usually obtainable only once per year, we wanted to make sure you do not miss the Spirtomb’s Halloween 2023 Quest line that is available right now.

Spiritomb Event-Exclusive Timed Research is available from October 19, 2023 at 10:00am, until October 31, 2023 at 8:00pm. It focuses on Spiritomb, and its 108 spirits. Complete this research to earn encounters with the elusive Spiritomb, as well as other Ghost type Pokémon.

How to get Shiny Spiritomb
Shiny Spiritomb is available as a random encounter after completing the Timed Research quest line. The chance to get a Shiny Spiritomb are ~1 in 64 encounters (*). Here is a comparison between regular and Shiny Spiritomb:

History of Spiritomb in Pokémon GO
Spiritomb debuted in 2018 via a Special Research line called A Spooky Message, giving us our first ever chance to catch this elusive Ghost-type Pokémon. During his initial appearance, Spiritomb was available as a 3-part limited Special Research quest that heavily drew from Spiritomb’s Pokedex entry.
Two quests in the Spooky Message chain featured the number 108, as Spiritomb’s Pokedex entry says the following: “A Pokémon that was formed by 108 spirits. It is bound to a fissure in an Odd Keystone”
Here’s how Spiritomb’s availability looked like throughout the years:
- In the years following 2018’s Halloween event, and then 2019’s repeat of Spiritomb’s quest line, Niantic decided to change this around.
- In 2020 Spiritomb came back with a bombastic shiny Spiritomb debut, and was available in Field Research tasks from PokéStops, so you could grind to your hearts content.
- During October 2021 Spiritomb was available the whole month, via the field research tasks Catch 18 ghost/dark types.
- However, in 2022 we’ve only been able to get a single Spiritomb, and it was locked behind a paywall, as a reward for completing the $5USD Halloween timed research.
At this point, we are just happy that Spiritomb is not paywalled, and that it is available as part of a free, globally available, Timed Research quest line.
Halloween 2023: Part 1
Halloween 2023 Part 1 event is currently ongoing in Pokémon GO, and it lasts from Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 10:00 AM local time to Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 10:00 AM local time.
During this time, the following things are happening in Pokémon GO:
- Greavard debuts, alongside shiny Phantump. Both Pokémon families are available and spawning in larger numbers than usual
- Spiritomb Timed Research is available for free, and a paid Timed Research is available featuring a special Halloween pose
- Trainers get additional Candy and Candy XL rewards for catching Pokémon with Nice, Great, and Excellent Throws
- Additional Candy and Candy XL for hatching Pokémon Eggs
- Halloween themed Pokémon appear more frequently in the wild
