After waiting for years, Mega Mewtwo X and Y are finally coming to Pokémon GO during the GO Fest 2026 celebrations. Touted to be two of the strongest attackers in the entire meta, trainers are eager to get these legends in their teams, but as expected from those rare species boasting two Mega Evolutions, you must be wondering which one you should prioritize.
The iconic Charizard has two Megas, and the Y variant is easily the stronger option, displaying a huge gap of power in the Fire typing. You will see the same with Mega Raichu Y surpassing X when they debut in Pokémon GO.
At this moment, the spotlight shines bright on Mewtwo as its Megas. Is Mega Mewtwo Y better than Mega Mewtwo X? If yes, is the difference as distinct as it is with Charizard and Raichu?
And where do Mega Mewtwo X and Y stand in the overall meta of the game?
To find out, let’s take a look at their stats, as they don’t follow the traditional 9% nerf formula. Rather, there appears to be a 3% nerf only, making these monsters more powerful than they were initially speculated to be.

With the stats and other details in place, let’s find out how Mega Mewtwo X fares in the Psychic and Fighting metas, and how Mega Mewtwo Y performs in the Psychic typing.
Using our GO Hub DPS Comparer Tool:

Mega Mewtwo Y takes the affirmative lead in the Psychic typing, overtaking both Mega Mewtwo X and Shadow Mewtwo in the damage figures. Shadow Raider Calyrex will become a meta-relevant Psychic attacker, but it doesn’t even cross regular Mewtwo, let alone the Mega Evolutions.
Speaking of the Megas, Mega Mewtwo Y does around 3.22% more damage than Mega Mewtwo X, and surpasses Shadow Mewtwo by an impressive 13.63% higher damage output. Usually, the X Mega is bulkier than Y, as seen in both Charizard and Raichu, but Mega Mewtwo Y is built differently, possessing not just higher offensive strength, but also more bulk than Mega Mewtwo X. However, the X version has one advantage. When facing a Fighting or Poison Raid Boss with a Dark-type coverage move, Mega Mewtwo X ends up taking neutral damage from it (thanks to its Fighting subtyping). On the other hand, the pure Psychic type Mega Mewtwo Y takes super-effective damage. But, apart from this issue, Mega Mewtwo Y is superior to Mega Mewtwo X in every single way.
Now, just how superior is Mega Mewtwo Y when facing Raid Bosses weak to Psychic as well as other types, that is, Fighting and Poison types?

Against Fighting Raid Bosses
When battling a Fighting Boss, the only other Pokémon that can be considered in a similar power bracket as Mega Mewtwo Y is the one-and-only Mega Rayquaza, with its devastatingly powerful -type Charged Attack, Dragon Ascent.
Despite Mega Mewtwo Y having a higher ATK than Mega Rayquaza, the latter’s Dragon Ascent boasts an incredible 112.00 in the DPSxDPE parameter, while Psystrike only has 72.20 in the DPSxDPE calculations. As such, Mega Rayquaza is the stronger attacker against Fighting Raid Bosses, even when using Dragon Tail as the Fast Attack. Funnily enough, Mega Mewtwo Y is the winner when it comes to competing against Air Slash + Dragon Ascent Mega Ray.

Keep in mind that both these Legendaries resist Fighting-type damage, so it all comes to the moveset. In a nutshell, Dragon Tail + Dragon Ascent Mega Rayquaza dishes out more damage than Mega Mewtwo Y, by around 4.74%, but it is not as bulky, which makes Mega Mewtwo Y better for keeping the Mega Bosses running for a longer time.
Against Poison Raid Bosses
When it comes to facing Poison-type Bosses, the Ground behemoth Primal Groudon is among the strongest attackers. However, unlike the Fighting case study, Mega Mewtwo Y or even Mega Mewtwo X and Shadow Mewtwo remain unbeaten in DPS by Primal Groudon.
Mega Mewtwo Y deals more than 28% higher damage than Primal Groudon against a Poison Raid Boss weak to both Psychic and Ground moves, making the Mewtwo entourage better than the Groudons.

Mega Mewtwo Y is clearly better than Mega Mewtwo X in every way when considering the Psychic meta, but the X variant has something Y doesn’t: a Fighting subtyping.
Here’s how Mega Mewtwo X functions in the Fighting meta:

Technically, Mega Mewtwo X’s standing in the Fighting department is more or less the same as the Psychic type, as it is outclassed only by the top attackers in each category, but it’s actually better as a Psychic type since the only winner above it is Mega Mewtwo Y.
In the Fighting type, both Mega Evolutions of Lucario (yes, the Z is insanely powerful) and Mega Blaziken take the honors, beating Mega Mewtwo X in DPS numbers. However, Mega Mewtwo X is much more bulky than any of them, making it a top-notch Mega Evolution to use in Raids.
However, there are issues. First, due to Mega Mewtwo X’s Psychic subtyping, it is inferior at taking hits from Dark moves. Mega Mewtwo X takes neutral damage from Dark, while most Fighting types resist it. Secondly, in the Psychic list, Mega Mewtwo X competes with its Y counterpart, both requiring hefty Mega Evolution and power-up costs.
Mega Blaziken hits harder than Mega Mewtwo X, and it’s a starter. This means it is easier to power up and even max out, and also cheaper to give it a second Charged Attack. Consequently, Mega Blaziken is easily the more resourceful choice as a Fighting-type attacker, and given that Mega Mewtwo X doesn’t do as much damage as well, it is also stronger.
Mega Mewtwo X must be envious of Mega Mewtwo Y’s performance!

Finally, we get to comparing Mega Mewtwo X and Y with the top attackers in Pokémon GO. As generalists, Mega Lucario Z takes the crown, boasting the best mix of offense and moveset, making it hit harder than anything else in the game. Mega Rayquaza once again steals Mega Mewtwo Y’s spotlight, dealing more DPS. And finally, we get to Mew Mewtwo X and Y, who take up the 3rd and 4th positions as the best generalists out there.
That said, Mega Mewtwo Y does take the cake in one parameter. It has the highest TDO in all of Pokémon GO, and the fact that it is a Mega Evolution is the icing on the cake, as it also boosts the attacks done by other attackers of its type longer than others. There’s more, as if you consider an overall performance, taking both DPS and TDO into account, Mega Mewtwo Y is second only to Mega Rayquaza as an overall generalist!
So the verdict is crystal clear: Mega Mewtwo Y is better than Mega Mewtwo X in every conceivable parameter, and it’s also one of the top attackers in Pokémon GO. Do understand that Mega Mewtwo X isn’t bad by any means. In fact, it’s exceptional, but Mega Mewtwo Y takes the lead.
