The Lore of the Lake Guardians

The Lake Guardians, also known as the Lake Trio, are a Legendary Trio from the Sinnoh region. They are made up of Azelf, Mesprit and Uxie. In the main series it is believed that all three of the Lake Guardians were born from the same egg.

According to legend the Lake Guardians were created by Arceus. It is said that when the Creation Trio, Dialga, Palkia and Giratina, are angered, the Lake Trio have the ability to calm them.

The Lake Trio are the only trio of Legendary Pokémon that all have the same typing, as they are all Psychic types. This means they all have the same weaknesses, Bug, Dark and Ghost, and are all strong against Fighting and Poison types.

In the main series, all of the Lake Guardians have access to the ability Levitate, but we do not currently have abilities in Pokémon GO.

Uxie is found in the Asia-Pacific region. Thanks to remote raiding trainers worldwide have been able to obtain the Lake Trio by being invited to raids in their specific region.

They are also unique in Pokémon GO in that they are the first legendary Pokémon that spawn in the wild, but they are incredibly rare. They only spawn in their respective regions and they usually only spawn near bodies of water.

The Inspiration

The Lake Guardians have several different inspirations. One of the main aspects of their inspiration is the Imperial Regalia of Japan, also known as the Three Sacred Treasures. They consist of sword Kusanagi no Tsurugi (草薙劍), the mirror Yata no Kagami (八咫鏡), and the jewel Yasakani no Magatama (八尺瓊勾玉). In turn these represent the three primary values, the sword is valor, the mirror is wisdom, and the jewel is benevolence. Uxie represents knowledge, the mirror. Mesprit is emotion, the jewel. Azelf is willpower, the sword.

The inspirations for their names comes in two parts. Firstly they are inspired by creatures from folklore, elves (Azelf), pixies (Uxie), and sprites (Mesprit). The other inspiration for their names is personal pronouns, you (Uxie), me (Mesprit), and us (Azelf).

In the main series Azlef is the guardian of Lake Valor. Azelf is known as the Willpower Pokémon, and it can make anyone who threatens it lose all willpower. It is a Psychic type.

In Japanese Azelf is known as ‘Agunomu’, which translates as a combination of agnostic, and gnome. Someone who is agnostic is someone who is not sure if a God exists.

It has a blue triangular shaped head and what appears to be large ears at the side of its head.

Mesprit is the only Lake Guardian that is occasionally referred to as female in the main series. The pink parts of Mesprit’s head may resemble pigtails, inferring a more feminine design than the others.

In Japanese Mesprit is known as ‘Emuritto’, which translates as a combination of ‘to smile’ or emotion, and sprite.
