January Research Breakthrough Encounters
From Saturday, January 1, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. to Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. PST (GMT −8) Onix will be the featured Pokemon in your research breakthrough box. If you’re lucky, you might encounter a shiny Onix.
Steelix Mega Energy Timed Research
This guide previously stated that Steelix Mega Energy will be available from Research Breakthrough Encounters. However, Due to an unforeseen issue, Steelix Mega Energy is unable to be received from Research Breakthroughs.
In its place, a Timed Research will be available during the month of January which will reward a total of 200 Steelix Mega Energy.

Five-Star Raids
Regice and Heatran will be returning to five-star raids this January! Also, for the first time in Pokémon GO, Genesect with a Shock Drive will be appearing in five-star raids! Please note: Raid rotations start and end at 10:00 a.m. local time on the dates listed.

Join us on Sunday, January 16, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time for a Community Day event featuring Spheal, the Clap Pokémon! Spheal will be appearing more frequently in the wild. Evolve Sealeo (Spheal’s Evolution) during the event or up to two hours afterward to get a Walrein that knows the Charged Attack Icicle Spear and Fast Attack Powder Snow.
