Ultra Beasts: Ultra Thrilling or Ultra Boring?

Hi trainers!

GO Fest season is almost over and it has had a very firm focus on the Alola region and the Ultra Beasts. All of them are now available and have been made available to everyone globally and perhaps now you are wondering what to do with them, where to focus your rare candy and stardust. Which ones are better for raiding and which ones are more for trainer battles and in what league?

Here we will do a quick delve into each Ultra Beast and where more in-depth analyses exist they will be linked to along with our own raid guides so you can be prepared to face them when they come back again!

Nihilego #0793

Artwork of Nihilego from Pokémon GO Nihilego RockPoison
Max CP at lvl 40 3949
Max CP at lvl 50 4465
ATK 249 DEF 210 HP 240
Weak to Resistances
Ground Psychic Steel Water Poison Bug Fairy Fire Flying

How does it look as a raid counter? Ranks highly under both typings, I would say go for it.

How does it look in trainer battles?

Great League – At level 15 Nihilego barely scrapes into sub-1500’s at 1496 so it does not bare considering for this division.

Ultra League – A lot of better options, way down the rankings….

Master League – Poison doesn’t even get a look in Master League much as discussed below.

Buzzwole #0794

Artwork of Buzzwole from Pokémon GO Buzzwole BugFighting
Max CP at lvl 40 3461
Max CP at lvl 50 3912
ATK 236 DEF 196 HP 216
Weak to Resistances
Flying Fairy Fire Psychic Bug Dark Fighting Grass Ground

How does it look as a raid counter? As a Bug attacker not great, lacking a bug fast move and outranked by its own Ultra Beast sibling Pheromosa, Buzzwole does not rank highly in the Fighting rankings either.

How does it look in trainer battles?

Great League – It can qualify CP wise but it is not worth using, its very far down.

Ultra League – Fares a lot better and is the first Bug type but is still niche rather than essential.

Master League – Same here, just beware meeting anything that take advantage of its double weakness to Flying.

Pheromosa #0795

Max CP at lvl 40 2842
Max CP at lvl 50 3213
ATK 316 DEF 85 HP 174
Weak to Resistances
Flying Fairy Fire Psychic Bug Dark Fighting Grass Ground

How does it look as a raid counter? As Bug comes in at #6 but it is fragile and will faint quickly. For Fighting there are a lot of better options (even Toxicroak ranks higher).

How does it look in trainer battles?

Great League – Does not rank.

Ultra League – Does not rank.

Master League – Irredeemably far down the rankings, even at level 50.

Max CP at lvl 40 3937
Max CP at lvl 50 4451
ATK 330 DEF 144 HP 195
Weak to Resistances
Ground Electric Flying Steel

How does it look as a raid counter? Basically top of the tree, should be prioritised on your Electric team.

How does it look in trainer battles?

Great League – Very difficult to get one that qualifies and not worth the effort either.

Ultra League – Barely in the rankings for this league, skip.

Master League – Low ranking and easier targets to get to level 50 with the same typing.

How does it look as a raid counter? Lacks a Steel fast move so can be skipped, doesn’t fare much better in the Flying category either.

How does it look in trainer battles?

Great League – Very low down, skip for a better option.

Ultra League – Mildly better but still a no.

Ultra League – Even lower, skip for investment.

Closing thoughts

There was a lot to go through there and hopefully you found at least some of it useful, remember more information can be found on the GO Hub database and links are given where available if you want a deeper dive by our other talented writers! Clearly some strong raid options and some strong battling options and some… are just nice to look at but if you like them, power them up, remember there is no right or wrong way to be a pokémon trainer, your account your rules! There is a pokémon for everyone which is why we all love it.

Let us know in the comments your favourite Ultra Beast and how they have met (or not) your expectations!

Til next time… 🙂
